The way I undertstand it is that you have a part called light_land, this part should ideally be just one polygon with it's surface normal (visible face) visible from the front of your project. This part should be placed at the the correct position for the light source.

I was wondering if you go into part properties the axis of the part is at position 0,0,0 rather than where the polygon is?

I am also under the impression that the polygon won't be visible just the light it provides on the ground.

as i understand it, you should have two parts, the other one is placed "behind" the first one,  and named for example "light_land_01".

these two will together produce the light in the direction of the axis they create (pretty clearly stated...)

i've just returned to gmax after a looooong break, but i'm pretty shure this is the way it goes.

oh, and the two "lights" must be linked to each other (parent-child).

good luck!

i just checked my super kingair, and here's how it goes:

create an object, name it light_land_1

modify objects pivot so that the blue arrow is pointing backwards from the direction of the light you wish to create.

clone object and name it light_land_1_2

move light_land_1_2 behind light_land_1 (just one inch is enoug)

assign material (light_land) to both of these parts

link these objects so that light_land_1 is the parent object.

this is how i make my landing and taxi lights, i don't know if it's the easiest way...
