How might I go about changing the rate at which fuel is consumed?
Can this even be done?

I've never tried it, but there is a fuel flow scalar in the aircraft.cfg file.
Hope that helps.....?

Yup reducing the scalar in the .cfg file will do the trick. Just make the number smaller
