Overclocking my Nvidia 6200

Postby future_ag_2010 » Sat Dec 30, 2006 1:24 pm

I got FSX a couple months ago and have been tweaking everything in sight ever since ;D. However, I just thought about overclocking my graphics card, and possibly my CPU. I used coolbits to try and overclock my Nvidia GeForce 6200. It's the PCI version with 128 MB of memory :P. Every time I would move up the core clock or the memory speed up at all, I would hit the Test button, but when I would hit apply, my computer would freeze. I shut it down, and when it came back up it said the system had recovered from a serious error :'(. So I decided to try to use the "Detect Optimal Frequencies" function. Hit the button, I got to about the last block of the test sequence thing and then it shut down-came back up, same result as manual overclocking :(. Any suggestions :-??

Also, I would really like to try and overclock my processor as well, but how would I do that? I have an HP computer with an Intel Celeron D Processor running at 2.52 GHz, with 1 G of RAM, running Windows XP, if that helps. Not sure about the motherboard.

While I'm at it, I might as well ask if anybody knows of any better PCI cards than what I have? I know there isn't much room for improvement on a PCI slot, but might as well ask. My budget is flexible, but preferably under $200. My 6200 runs @ 350 Mhz core clock, and 400 Mhz memory clock.

[smiley=dankk2.gif]Thanks in advance for the help!!!

Just one thing- A 6200 is definately NOT a bottom of the line card. I have a GeForce FX5500 (see below) and I can run almost all my games at max settings.

Thanks for your help everybody.

Vavavoom- It's way outta my price range too. But still, we can dream, right? ;D

Bad_at_FS- from what I hear, that's pretty impresive for an FX 5500-is it PCI? AGP? PCI Express?

Basically the 6200 should run FSX pretty nice as i assume its not DX9c, so it doesn't have to render the water and stuff :)

I checked, and I know I'm running DX 9.0C-is that bad? Do I need to get a different version? Also, FSX probably doesn't run as well as it could because it's a PCI card. I don't have any AGP or PCI-Express slots though. Should I get a motherboard that has those? If so, what kind?

6200 isnt a bad card for FS9... it IS DX9... like the 6600 and 6800 however don't expect much out of it, because its a locked up 6600. Basically you have 4 pixel pipelines and a 450Mhz core..... I could only overclock mine by 25Mhz and it was a noticable improvement, but not enough to max games out, With the right hardware a 6200 MIGHT max out FS9 with payware etc.... I have one around here, I put it in my HP and it worked great for a while at least. For overclocking, don't bother... you wont get much!

Gunny-thanks for the tip-i'll go ahead and give up on that-I'm assuming that the 6200 you referred to was a PCI-E card, and since mine is PCI, there's definitely no hope :P. Oh well. Any suggestions for a better PCI card?

mine was AGP. I'd reckon save your cash and get an entirely new rig once vista and DX10 are around, what are your specs?

I have 2 open PCI slots, no AGP, PCI-E slots, a 2.52 ghz Intel Celeron Processor, not sure about the motherboard, 1 G of ram, running windows xp SP2. Does that help at all? let me know if that isn't enough info. thanks!

You may want to save up what money you can, and once Vista is out get a decent Dual core Computer at stores like best buy etc with PCI-E Slot.... I bought mine for 489 my specs are in sig, Also for 100 more I got a nice 19 inch wide. My guess is a decent mid priced Vista computer would do you fine as long as it had a PCI-E slot etc....

What brand is it? That's a really nice computer for 489 :o. is all that stuff besides the monitor standard? or did you add stuff to it? I've seen some nice computers made by E-machines @ Bestbuy, but I've heard that the quality isn't that great. are they just kind of throwaway computers? For what they had in them, they should have cost about 7 or 800 dollars, but they were like 300 or so. Thanks for the suggestion.

P.S. sorry to ask so many questions, but im just trying to figure everything out right now ;). FSX likes to confuse me ;D.
