Help with Changing AGP Speed to x8

Call me stupid, but I've been out of the loop for a year+.

My specs below are current and BOIS & video drivers are up-to-date.

My problem is I cannot use AGP x4 or x8.

I remember this feature being dependent on the BIOS settings, but I can figure out how to set my AGP speed

The BIOS should allow you to set it.

ATi Tool, RivaTuner, and the Cat Controol center should also work.

I have access to the ATI Control Panel and I also use ATI Tool.

It seems my AGP BUS is Off or deactivated (if that's possible)

Using the CP I can change the setting to 4x or 8x but when I restart and ATI does it's tests, it shows as off again.

Being the Geek I am, I'm suprised I can't figure this out.

In the computer BIOS... you must have the primary adapter set to AGP and some BIOS's require 4x or 8x be set as well. It could also be a bad driver install to but I would check the BIOS first, and if it is not set correctly.. set it then re-run the driver check enabling 8x.

If that does not work, reinstall the drivers

In addition to video drivers, I've also upgraded my BIOS. The only setting specifically to AGP is which has primary AGP/PCI, I obviously set it for AGP. So thanks for mentioning that.

I remember in the old days having an AGP BUS speed option, but I'm beginning to believe it's more software driven nowadays.

I used to use UniAN drivers and should probably find a newer version and go back,  but I'm now using the new Catalyst and I think, well no need to give my opinion here...

That question falls in the "is it plugged in" category... see story below.  No offense taken, and yes I did.


This reminds me of a story... While I was on the USS Abraham Lincoln for 6 months, I was basically the landlord for several spaces that the pilots use. The Ready Room for one.  I had one of the pilots ask me why the refridgerator wasn't working. After saying it worked fine, I asked if it was plugged in.  He laughed and rolled his eyes.

So... I went to investigate...

I thought pilots were smart?

I forgot to install my Chipset drivers.

If that is the case... with ATI and AGP you must follow this order of install for max performance

1. uninstall video drivers, reboot into safe mode
2. use driver clean pro to do a flush of all ati drivers, boot into windows
3. Cancel out of any hardware found box
4. uninstall motherboard drivers, reboot... note: for RAID boot systems you must be careful to NOT uninstall the RAID drivers
5. Cancel any hardware found box
6. Install motherboard drivers, reboot
7. Cancel any hardware found box
8. install video drivers, reboot
9. Give the ATI system a chance to configure.. once finished, open the CCC and set up the video drivers.
10 REBOOT
