improved fps and graphics?

Postby FSGT Gabe » Fri Jun 16, 2006 11:53 am

Hey guys,

I've just got a little question.  Ever since I got flight sim 2k4 I've been having trouble (especially once i started doing the whole add-on thing  :P) with horrible frame rates.  The best I've ever gotten is probably 20 and even then it usually is somewhat of a slide show, you know, getting stuck every few seconds.  And what's really bad is that most of my sliders (autogen, scenery, etc.) are only on normal or dense!  Here are my system specs:

Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 1

Manufacturer: Cicero
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.20 GHz
2.20 GHz
224 MB of RAM
40 GB Hard drive

Ya, I know it's sad and that my biggest problem is probably my lack of enough RAM.  What I'm wondering is how much RAM should I buy?  Should i get 512 MB or 1 GIG?  I'm thinking of in the future, too, since I'm planning to get FSX when it comes out.  What do you think I'll need?  Thanks alot for the help!!

(Oh, and while I'm here, if I want to get a new graphics card, what would you suggest?)

Well get 1~2GB of RAM. I have used 1GB for about 4 years, and recently upgraded because of all apps I run. 1GB is the baseline for what you should look at. Also look at OCZ Gold edition RAM.

As for the video card, that processer will most likely choke on many of the nicer cards. Look at a 6800XT.

I agrree what joyce said apart from the ram.  OCZ gold is very expensive and unless your planning on overclocking quite pointless.  Go for a cheaper brand like corsair value or crucial.

Thanks guys...

What's that?  (Sorry if I sound incompetent, but...)  And another question, what system specs do I need to bring when I go to buy the RAM, and how do I find them out?  Thanks so much for all the help!!

FSGS is good, but not if you have a system like yours. You should think more about getting new hardware before you think about FSGS. The thing about it is that it takes your current hardware to the max. So if you have a low end system your only getting a small increase. Personally I think that $60 is better spent on a GPU than FSGS.
