Windows 98 is old, and by XP's standards, unstable.
Software is optimised for XP. Get over it :P ;D
You won't need a new hard drive, just back up what you wish to save, re-format and install Xp on your existing drive.
Alternatively, partition your existing drive, and have XP on the other partition, keeping '98 happy.
I have a 384MB pIII 667, it won't run FS9 under '98 at anything other than a crawl (4 - 9 fps!), with XP installed, it happily runs FS9 (average 22 fps) albeit at low settings. Its perfectly playable.
