Search Engine

Postby expat » Sun Sep 18, 2011 3:16 am

My search engines, Firefox and IE for some reason will not do as they are told. It could be a providor problem, but does anyone have any ideas.......

I am on a German server with T-online. My home page is set to Google.COM but regardless, when I open either of the above, I get Google.DE. Apart from the homepage setting in options, is there anyway I can force .com over .de???

Thanks

Matt

Hello Matt... :)...!

Doesn't opening; Tools > Options > General, in Firefox, and re-setting your Home Page, cure the problem?
Sometimes when Google "forces " me to upgrade my Firefox, it automatically sets Google up as my Home Page... >:(....I then have to change the setting back to MY (Orange) home page!

Hi Paul,

Default homepage is not the problem, it is a dot com or dot de problem. FF & IE are refusing to use the dot com. It is not the end of the world, but I have to scroll down and click on "Google in English" every time :( :(

Thanks Mark, that did the trick 8-), but what has .co.uk got that .com or .de does not :-?

Are you saying that It automatically translates to your language? It's really annoying when It decides I[glow=yellow,2,300]MUST[/glow] Speak Swahili Cause I'm using google.ke. >:( >:( >:( Had to change both my homepage and search engine on opera
Most people think that flying a plane is dangerous, except pilots because they know how easy it is.
Arguing with a pilot is like wrestling with a pig in the mud, after a while you begin to think the pig likes it.

When you setup a PC in Windows it has certain settings such as a default language, keyboard and clock settings. I'm guessing Google looks at the clock settings and the default language to pick the language most likely to be needed.
I'll bet if you changed all the relevant Windows settings to UK, including the clock it'd automatically default to English on starting Google ;)

When bought the computer, it had the installation program only on it. As windows installed, it gave me all the relevant questions. English was chosen as home language and location, but the time of course is set to Germany. Could this be the root of the problem, (though co.uk as I said has cured it), just being nosy now ;D

It was not translating, but was only giving me Google.de and not Google.com due to my location.

im not THAT literate in computers, but I think .com are mainly servers in the USA, where as .co.uk is a server farm in the UK.

but I would go with what everyone else is saying.  As to why it messed up, I could not even fathom a guess, but I am glad to hear that you got it working correctly with the .co.uk
