Trace your Internet signal across the World!

Postby Fozzer » Mon Jul 13, 2009 5:21 am

Here is a fascinating program, (like Tracert), which visually tracks your Internet Signal across the World...!

http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/visual-tracert/

Type in the Remote Address; ie.... simviation.com...or whatever...

Press the Proxy Button (You)...

And watch the EXTREMELY LONG path around the World from you to Simviation...(via Alpha Centauri!).... ;D...!

Paul... ;)...!

...now I know why I get "Time out" reports!... ;D... ;D... ;D...!

According to that, I live less than 1,000 miles from the SimV server,  and the signal has to go from one coast to the other, passing me twice before it turns around once more and comes to me.

Time outs indeed.

I am sat at work in the hanger at the end of the airport. I typed in the airport website and it registered 31 hops and 14608 miles and I am only 1 mile away ;D ;D

Cool link Paul. I don't understand the complications of having to go through so many hops instead of just direct (or at least not to the other coast of the US) ;D

So is this telling us where Pete lives (the hoster) or where the server that hosts SimV is located?

If it's Pete, he lives somewhere on Barker Street, near the Oak Grove cemetary a few miles from Dulles Intl.  Pretty scary, that we can find the location of something that easily these days.

It also makes me wonder about the phone traces in the movies.  The trace from my computer to the source was 20.6 seconds, and had 19 hops in it.  In the movies, it always takes five minutes or so to trace the signal of a phone, and we're only using a free internet service.  Imagine what the cops or the government is using.  I'm betting a real phone trace these days is nearly instantaneous.

11,943 miles.

But it is still quicker than following the route myself!

This will tell you where the SimV server is located. Unless this is hosted off his machine, in which case it might show you just where the ISP is, or maybe Pete's house... But it is unlikely.

It reminds me of 007 Goldeneye, just no confounded exploding pens and I am definately not Invincible!

I live only a couple hundred miles as the crow flies from the server.... but it took over 6000 miles to get the trace.

Nice link Fozzer.
