32bit or 64bit? You choose!

64bit FTW!

Although i am forced to use Vista 32bit on my laptop because the boot camp drivers aren't up to snuff.  :-/

But Ubuntu 64 and the Mac OS work great!

Gaming, high performance programs: 64-bit
General computing using a variety of different programs: 32-bit
32bit is compatible with more programs but 64bit is moving up there. I've never used a 64bit OS but I can say it better from my experience with 32bit :-/

i just moved my pc to vista 64... so far i like it... being able to actually USE the whole 6GB of ram is a very good thing also

i did have to go hunting for new 64bit drivers for pretty much everything... but these days, 64bit support is ever-growing and finding the drivers is relatively easy

older hardware however, have a chance of not being deemed worthy of continued 64bit support, and therefore be discontinued... and that's a chance you have to take when going for a 64bit OS

i really haven't had a chance to install anything significant yet on my new rig, so i can't say how it compares to my old 32bit OS configuration

but 64bit is the future... and eventually, we'll all be moving that way, whether we like it or not...

I have Vista Home Premium 32-bit on my laptop. Then again, most laptops HAVE 32-bit Vista. But it sucks A LOT that I have no use of my last GB DDR3 RAM. When Windows 7 64-bit gets out, I'll be over it like Homer Simpson over a pack of donuts.

So the answer is really: 32-bit = General computing needs, home work etc.
64-bit = gaming and the stronger computers.

PS: Can't wait till I get the "computer disease" off my PC.

The only difference, and the thing that makes either one better, is what you plan on using your computer for.

I am happily running 32-bit Vista Home Premium. 32-bit operating systems (usually) support up to 3.5-3.75GB memory.

As far as I am aware, this includes graphics card memory too. So I am running 2.5GB total in that case.



If you plan to use more than that 3.5-3.75 amount then you will usually need a 64-bit operating system as it essentially can deal with more memory. Actually, it can support more like 17,000,000+ gigs of memory. Please, nobody even attempt that!


Which is better? Whichever is best for you. I was buying an ethernet cable the other day from my local computer shop and I overheard someone trying to sell their computer which had 64-bit and 2GB memory... What a waste, I thought.

..does that mean that all my crates of computer games, etc, Processors, Graphics Cards, etc, dating back into the distant past, (1970's), which I regularly use, will no longer work with a future, sooper-dooper, 64 bit system?

Depends on your apps. No point in having 64 bit if your apps are all 32 bit. Scan the net and you'll find thousands of users complaining about the lack of 32 bit support on 64 bit sytems. Eventually 64 bit will be de facto system, but probaly not for a couple years yet.

My problem is a low spec PC, and it didn't perform well on XP 64, but on this Vista edition it takes off with afterburner!!!
