X-plane scenery

Postby hsvfan » Wed Jan 23, 2008 3:10 pm

Hi all
Does anyone here use x-plane.
I was wondering if someone could crab some screen  shoots of my local city, Welington New Zealand, so I can see what the scenery looks like in x plane

Cheers

I have used x-plane in the past, however it failed to run properly on my current computer so I gave up on it.

My guess is that wellington will look pretty un-wellington-ish in default X-plane - default x-plane is from what I remember very basic, for example there are no airport buildings at all. It has the capacity to produce astonishing results, but for that you need some pretty heavy-duty scenery add-ons - which are available, but with a even heavier-duty price tag. :o

I could try getting it (X-plane) up and running again on my new rig which arrives soon... ;)

Not expert on that sort of thing.... all I can tell you from memory is that it uses a set of repeating textures that produce annoying patterns on the ground.

So does FS9 and FSX(?)

nope not anymore guys, Austin and his team started making Global Scenery since V8 and they're now on V9. All taken from sattelite data etc.

There's Manchester, NH. Only one airport has buildings in Xplane 8 and 9 (the default airport) because Austin just doesn't have enough manpower at Laminar to add buildings to more airports at the moment. They don't have seasonal textures yet either, but promised it was coming soon. However, many add on developers design airports for it. Also they have some really nice reflective water which is a big feature for V9 (can't run it on my laptop) another feature is full 3d cockpits for some planes, and now a few airplane add-on makers are starting to pick up. Theres also 3d clouds and autogen buildings and such, don't have them in the shots here though. I'll take some soon. Getting 27 FPS+ in case your wondering.

to see the whole feature list+extra shots go to
http://www.x-plane.com/beta

for even more shots go to x-plane.org, and then go to the screenshots forum and look in the newer topics in "What plane did you fly today" (it's a sticky) and any of the ones in the thread: X plane 9 beta screenshots

and finally, www.global-scenery.org has some nice shots of V8 global scenery, but it's not as good as V9.

I'll take shots of your hometown soon.  ;)

Wow! Captain T38,  those shots look amazing. If you get the chance to take some shoots of wellington NZ I would love to see them, love to see what the harbor area  and the hutt valley is like, compare with the default fs9 scenery
What size mesh does xplane use

I think V8 was 30m, and V9 has been improved according to austin, and you can certainly notice it in several areas.

heres wellington, new zealand! I tried to take most of these with reflective water, but it's not really good looking with my graphics card.

one more post of shots before I'll take some more of your area hsv. Just got the new ATI drivers and b19 of x plane, and water reflections are working for me now. Heres a Piper Super Tomahawk from x-plane V8 over the Dallas-Fort Worth area:

CaptainT38, make sure you put the next images as a bunch of links...Otherwise, the 600KB limit will be busted...I don't wanna see these shots gone to waste 8-)
