My Rant, and Begging

Postby Kaworu » Sun Nov 18, 2007 11:42 am

Alright...I've had it.  >:(

I think my computer hates me. I don't ask for great gaming...or even acceptable gaming. All I ask is 10-15 fps. Thats it. But thats the least of my problems.  >:(

Lets start with the Start-up. how long is yours...a minute...2, 3 minutes? Not mine...I'm blessed with a 1 minute boot (BIOS to login), followed by 5 minutes of waiting for all of my programs to start. I can start my PC up in the morning, and make breakfast while staring my PC. Making eggs on toast is faster.  >:(

Next. running stuff. That's rather slow too. It takes 30 seconds for Firefox to start...longer for IE and Safari. Then try running stuff like Halo CE and FS9. SLOOOOOOW  >:( Not to mention errors displaying sites correctly...most inconveniently...MY BANK'S WEBSITE!

All I can say to compliment my system is that FPS in gaming is very good(for my system specs)...20-25.

Now...the random errors. My PC loves to crash. Why, just the other day, I was changing from the
ugly XP default theme to the classic windows theme...and the entire thing froze irreversibly. No HDD access. Nothing.

Now what enfuriates me is this...I fork over $100 for new RAM...it makes nada diff outside of FS. startup is slow still. Running things is slow still.

Further...the computers at my school take all of 20 secinds to startup and logon...with 256kb of RAM.

I'm going to throw my PC out the window soon.  8-)

I have tried all of Nick's tips here on simv. None of them help. I'm confused. Anybody want to help me? I cannot afford a new computer of any quality.

First of all. How many programs do startup when you switch on your pc? Looks like there are too many things on your pc trying to startup. Look for a program like Quick Startup or Startup Changer to reduce these and make your startup faster. It can also be done in your register, just don't ask me how.

Second. Check your pc for viruses, spyware and stuff like that. These can also slow down a pc.

Good luck,

Crash ;)

Thanks.

I run Zone Alarm Suite, Logitech Wingman (for gmae controlers), O&O Defrag, OneTouchMon (for scanner), Visual ToolTip, ViStart, and Thoojose Sidebar (for weather and quick stats).

^Those are things that I choose to run, but I know could be removed (with varying consequences!)^

Here is all the processes enabled

(the dual ViStarts are just a problem cropping the shots...not really dual!)

I don't have any viruses as far as I knwo, I will look into that (again!)

Yeah, uuuhhhh...the best thing to do would be to suck it up and turn off some of those processes. this looks like it will help you. I had the same problem. Then I turned off some processes, 'regcured' my system and now I get more FPS with FS9 and my start up is less than 2 minutes on my 4 year old computer. If your computer is old (like mine) there are THOUSANDS of unused crap in your registry ESPECIALLY if you've downloaded plenty of FS stuff etc. Regcure is worth the price.

I'll try RegCure. Thank you VERY much!

If you are wondering why I havn't disabled those pointless processes that just hog resources...it's because they didn't help the startup...trust me...I've experimented!

Ahh...don't get me started on the 360 vs. PS3 debate...I've made up my mind. Let me just tell you...ps3 gives me everything I need, and more...not to mention my freinds have PS3s not 360's. Also, all the games I'm interested in are on both systems...except for Halo   ::)

i'm desperately confused. RegCure removed several hundred problems, but it made 0 difference. Also, Spyware Doctor removed 3 adware programs. Again, no diff.  :(

Got any other suggestions?

Here are my full specs:
Dell Dimension 4600
2.4gHz P4 proc
2 Gig DRR 400 RAM (G.Skill)
40 Gig 5400RPM Maxtor HDD (C drive)
320 Gig 7200RPM WD HDD (Game Drive)
64Mb Geforce 4 MX on APG (w/ Geforce 2 equivalent processor)

My PsU was manufactured without any markings on it, but I know it is  150-200 watts.

I've heard stories of new power supplies helping people. I need one anyway, but could I expect any difference?

Just as a side note to follow up last post, a online test I just took, HERE reccomends 311 watts for my current config...! know my PSU is way less than that. Would that be a problem?  :-?
