Internet Explorer error...

Postby Iwannabeapilot » Wed Sep 26, 2007 10:34 am

"Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site *address*

Opeartion aborted"

First, I should explain that I'm using AOL 9.0. I know I shouldn't be using AOL but I'm stuck with it I'm afraid.  :'( I use Firefox to browse the internet so I don't get this problem, but my parents use the AOL software and they can't access any of the AOL pages (e.g: News, Chat, Shopping etc.) Other pages work fine. I've tried to get them to use Firefox instead but they're refusing. I spent most of last  night searching for a fix but didn't find anything and I'm not even going to try and ask AOL for support. I've recently uninstalled Comodo Personal Firewall so could that be something to do with it? If anyone can help at all then please please do! I'm getting alot of stick about this and the last thing I should be doing right now is trying to sort this so I'd be very grateful for any help.

Thanks

It's IE7 and the firewall is just called Comodo Personal Firewall. Website

A silly thought but have they cleared out all the history, cookies etc? Just IE is rather sensitive about this...

Try uninstalling IE, and then re-install....

90% of the time either a complete re-install/reboot will fix most problems........

Give it a try anyway, won't take you that long ;)

Do as Ozzy said...clear the history, cookies, etc.  Last time I used Explorer I had the same problem.  Quick clean out and it was good to go again.

Convert your parents to FireFox...Make them read this:

And so at last the beast fell and the unbelievers rejoiced.
But all was not lost, for from the ash rose a great bird.
The bird gazed down upon the unbelievers and cast fire
and thunder upon them. For the beast had been
reborn with its strength renewed, and the
followers of Mammon cowered in horror.

from The Book of Mozilla, 7:15

FireFox owns IE...'Nuff said :P :P

Done. Hasn't helped though I'm afraid. Re-installing IE is a good idea, but how do I do that? There is no 'repair' option in the add/remove programs menu.  :-?

Try downloading the latest version of IE, and running the install file, when that runs there could be an option to remove the old one or repair.....

If not, google 'how to uninstall IE' then read the info on microsofts webpage, i found something earlier about how to uninstall if it does not appear in the add/remove programs list ;)

Did you try AOL Technical Help as I suggested?

I did, they told me to re-install the software and clear the history and cookies which hasn't worked.

Some personal firewall software configurations can restrict access to AOL.

I uninstalled the firewall the day before this started happening. When it was still installed, it wasn't blocking AOL or IE and there were no problems.

I've just re-installed IE but that hasn't worked either.

In that case I would try reinstalling the firewall software.

No luck on that one either I'm afraid.

Right, let's start from the beginning. I assume your parents are using the AOL browser to log on to the Internet. Are you saying that they cannot access the AOL site with that? If so, the problem is with the AOL software & nothing to do with IE or any other alternative browser. Why not swallow your pride & go back to the AOL Tech Help people. Tell them that their last suggestion didn't work. They are the ones most likely to have the answer.
