IM Software

Postby a1 » Sat Aug 04, 2007 10:05 pm

I was thinking of getting Yahoo Messenger. It looks pretty good to me but are there any other programs that are batter? I want low disk space, medium amount of functions, no little hidden tech stuff around it, and best of all free account. What is the most basic one out there. It would be best if there were no background services that go with it.

Thanks. :)

I try to stay away from MSN as much as possible, because of its large overhead. I use Skype and sometimes Xfire.

Well I suppose that just says it all really. I use skype because my friends use it, and you use MSN because your friends use that.

Just use whatever everybody else is using  ;) or use several, like me.

I like Pidgin becasue it doesn't matter what the other person is using I can still chat with them meaning not having to have multiple programs to keep up with everyone.

Regarding IM, my company has it's information technology group spread out in several cities.  I regularily find myself working with others in different cities on projects or troubleshooting programs.  My office used to use MS IM.  It worked out quite well.  We now use MS Office Communicator, which works out even better.  Not only can we end up having several conversations quite seamlessly during the work day, but a person can invite others to view some program code or a design document, and then share their desktop and lead others through the presentation.  It works out VERY well.

But the one drawback......I sometimes find myself IM'ing a coworker who's just 1 cube away.   ::)
