Really?  I have gotten by for years without it.

How much RAM is is using?

If RAM is a problem you could just turn it off for gaming.  I leave Avast on because it doesn't use much RAM and it isn't worth the trouble to turn it off.

Another possibility - switch to a better AV program.

SVEHOST is a system process I think msmsgs.exe looks like windows messenger (The ancient MSN that comes with windows) Just go to run, type in msconfig and disable it so you'll never have to worry about it again, and ditch the Norton, get something like AVG and turn it 100% off and fire it up ONLY to scan, obviously when not gaming, This is what I do, Works well, I haven't had a virus in at least 5 months.

In my humble opinion not having a virus in the last 5 months isn't great record. I thought the idea of anti virus was supposed to prevent you from getting viruses in the first place, not to remove them should they pop up because it's been switched off.
I use to have Norton but ditched it for Kaspersky Internet Security. This seems to be fine, and doesn't eat away at performance, even when doing a full system scan.

I also found another one of those memory eatting things. svchost.exe Please tell me why I have so many things that eat my memory.

svchost.exe are background services grouped into one. Disable them by going start--->run--->services.msc. I do not know what SVEHOST.exe is.

No, don't disable scvhost. I forget exactly what it does, but I remember closing it on my comp once. The result wasn't good, but I forget what exactly stop working.

svchost.exe is a network connection used to connect to LAN networks and the internet.
Disabling it whilst playing games should be fine (Thats what I do), but whenever I connect to the home network, it starts up again, so I guess it is needed.

Also svehost.exe seems like some virus name, as it is closley named to svchost.exe (viruses like to name themselves like windows files ;))
I'd google svehost.exe, and try to locate the file and scan it with a GOOD antivirus (e.g. not Norton ;D)

Also, don't go round randomly ending proccesses, that can have disastirous effects :o

msmsgs.exe is the proccess for windows messenger, which starts automatically upon each logon by defualt. To disable to go
>Start Menu
>Run
>msconfig
>Startup Tab
>Find msmsgs.exe and uncheck.

Also, disable any onther startup proccesses, they really eat memory sometimes :(

THIS IS ALL THAT NEEDS TO BE DISABLED IN SERVICES:

http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2 ... 3;start=#5

Assuming you are not running an older DELL computer and ARE using an original WindowsXP SP2 disk, (not something provided by DELL or HP) follow that LIST TO THE LETTER, including the purchase of O&O Defrag

leave the rest of the services ALONE and make SURE the startup system is not loading a bunch of crap unneeded software like REALPLAYER and other garbage

GET RID OF NORTON AND ALL ITS SUPPORTING SOFTWARE. USE AVG, NOD32 OR AVAST

Once Norton is installed, its very hard to get rid of the damage that software really does to Windows. Many find it best to do a complete drive wipe reinstall (NOT A REPAIR) of the OS to get rid of that garbage spyware AV

System Restore is the LARGEST resource hog in Windows. If you can live without it, SHUT IT DOWN as my list provides. If you cant live without it, you just have to live with the resources it sucks up.

LEAVE SERVICES ALONE, DONT MESS WITH THAT

Startup programs are different and that is an area you need to make sure is clean

NOTE: AVG USERS..
