Windows Shut-Down: Excessively long wait!

Postby Fozzer » Tue May 29, 2007 10:52 am

Hello Chums...

Socket A: AMD 2600+ MMX: 2.1 GHz
Windows XP: SP2.
2.3 Gb DDR Ram.

I think I asked this question a long time ago. No one came up with a suggestion at the time.... ::)...!

In the Olden Days whenever I clicked the "Start Button" and selected "Shut Down" a window would immediately pop-up asking; "Shut Down?"..."Restart?"..."Have fun with DOS?".
I select "Shut down", some Hard Drive activity would take place, sorting Things out, then a further window "Shutting down", followed quickly by the computer switching off.

...all that was in the Olden Days...In a Distant Galaxy...Far, far away... 8-)....

Now, whenever I select "Start"...."Shut down"....
My cursor arrow disappears, the computer freezes, no Hard Drive activity, and a long, long wait...like "Forever", before my "Selection Window" appears.
I select "Shut Down"...no Hard drive activity, another long, long wait...like "Forever", followed by the "Shutting Down" window pop-up, and the computer finally shuts-down.

Most times I think that life is too short for all this waiting-around, and I have to press the Computer "Switch off" Button to avoid hanging-about, waiting for "Things To Happen" malarkey!... >:(...!

Any ideas as to what is causing these very long waits?....(Note that the computer freezes, and there is no Hard Drive activity going on...like sorting the Files, Registry, etc, out before finally closing down!)...;)...!

I do all the usual, regular, De-frags, Registry checks, Spyware checks, Virus checks, etc, etc....

....but still I am stuck with these L-o-n-g waits before the computer finally shuts down...every time!... :o...!

Cheers, Lads...!

Paul....ZZZZZzzzzzzz........click....!

This isnt the best answer, and Im sure Nick N has a better alternative. I would always re-install windows when I run into crap like that. Of course I dont have anything too important on my hard drive.

Another guess would be to run a registry tool and a defrag, personally I have had some luck with that!

Paul, what sound card do you have? If it's SBLive, check into updating the sound drivers.

Sounds like its time to run TuneXP for faster shut downs/boot ups etc!

Many thanks for the replies, Lads...

Lots of excellent tips from Mushroom and Gunny to try-out... ;)...!

...looking good, so far... :)...!

(It's amazing how many problems accumulate over time, in Windows XP)... :o...!

Yes Fozzer I know, for unknown reasons my bootups have been taking 1-5 minutes.... Quite annoying, until Gunnerman suggested TuneXP!
