Norton System Works versus AVG...?

Hello my virus paranoid Chums... ...!

I have running in my computer Norton System Works 2001 and AVG anti virus programs.

The Norton program is a payware product where I have to pay for its continued use and updates each year.

AVG for Free is a free to use product.

My use of Norton will expire in a months time and I wonder if it is really worth continuing to pay for the program....

norton will use up a lot more system resources than avg and as far as im awareavgs more likely to detect a virus (although I could be wrong)

Keep Norton Utilities but scrap NAV. NU is just too useful to scrap.
I had NAV for a while only beacause it had a supposed 1-time pay "Lifetime" upgrade. Apparently a lifetime in Nortonese is about 3 years. I was also supposed to be offered discounts on future versions but never heard a peep from them. I felt cheated with Norton.
AVG, on the other hand, updates and upgrades with no problems for free. Also, the pay version offers more flexibility if you want it.

Norton uses way more resources!

I've been running Norton for a few years, when my subscription expired I tried out AVG Free, and I am not going back to Norton.

I think they detect viruses equally well. I like AVG Free better because it uses less resources and it is free.

You could always try AVG and if you don't like it pay for Norton. I'm not going back.

Norton is a resource hog no doubt. When I had Norton installed I experianced more pc issues than any virus ever caused. As a matter if fact only time I had any viruses was while Norton was in use
One thing Fozz is that you shouldn't be running 2 AV programs, chances are it isn't offering any extra protection, it is using far more resources than necessary, and third knowing Norton it is probably not allowing AVG to do anything most likely rendering AVG useless.

Personally I would banish Norton completely, which will probaly require a format anyway to remove all the crap that will be left behind even after a uninstall.

For a paid AV I highly recommned NOD32, it has a small footprint, very little resource use, and with it installed I have yet to have any type infection and I don't need or use a firewall (one more resource hog not running) or any spyware software .

For free AV stick with AVG or AVAST, both good, do the job and don't kill your pc.

As for the other system tools Norton Works provide Im certain there are comparible freeware programs that will do the same thing, maybe even better.

I know they say that Norton is the most widely used AV protection, but when you consider almost every prebuilt pc and most other software you buy forces it on people, it is no wonder, i am just curious how many use and buy Norton by actual choice?

I may keep Norton System works just for it's FAB utilities, and just use AVG for it's virus searching...COOL... ...!

Notice that it's not possible to un-install Norton, as Pol says......!
...only a complete HDD Format will get rid of it totally... ...!

Norton takes over an entire system and crushes its resources,... this is true of the AV products as well and any of thier spyware utilities which all send information back to symatic on a regualr basis.

Unless you are highly computer savvy, getting rid of Norton perminatly takes more than an 'uininstall" OR using the bull-dung tool they offer... its a headache of mounds of lines in the registry and left over files I call a -bughunt-



The best method to get rid of Norton if your not into a bughunt is to wipe out windows and NEVER install that malware-spyware product or any part of it again

It is not that hard removing it. I had versions 2002 and 2003 and they were pretty easy to remove with a registry editor. I use a 3rd party editor that actually has a decent search feature. 2003 was hard to uninstall though, there was 3 or 4 different components in Add/Remove and you had to remove them in correct sequence or they wouldn't uninstall. Hilarious.

i use AVG and have done for a while now and i can say that its brilliant. in the last year or two i have had mb 1 or 2 things get on. but AVG has got rid of them easily.

I never understand why everyone seems to put Norton down?

Why is it so bad? I mean my PC and Lappy both have Norton and they run just fine and quick boot up in about a minute...Norton is the only Anti-virus program I have used in two years and I have had No problems, No viruses, almost surfing the net every day!

The only reason some people get virus is because their not safe on the net and download from any were view any web-page...(wont go there)...and open emails who they dont know are from...and then they blame it on their Anti Virus Software?

But Norton is fine it works so well!

A minute to boot up is a long time My pcs boot in less than 15 seconds.

Also If Norton works for you go for it, I personally dont like a AV program that uses all the resources, just look at your task manager and see how much RAM is being used by Norton alone and you will see why so many dont care for it.
Also why pay a yearly price when there are better products for free?

I have nothing against payware AV, I do pay for NOD32, on my home desktop but after you use NOD you see that they raised the bar as far as AV goes (they ARE the bar)

But again NOD has a small footprint, is unobtrusive and uses little resources, resources that other programs and apps will have available to do thier thing, something Norton won't allow

Of course you state that Norton is the only AV you ever used, so maybe you should try a PC without Norton, you will quickly see what we are talking about
