This is tomfoolery.

I can rip my CDs, but why can't I copy my DVDs?  Do any of y'all know of such programs?  Every program I've tried says it can't do a dang thing with copy-protection.

Yeah, true - copying DVDs is illegal. There are legal programs, however, which will copy a DVD perfectly, without having to hinder with codes and stuff, called DVD CopyX. This program was once legal, then made illegal and is now once again allowed.

Copying CD's is illegal too. But we've all done it. Recording songs off the radio is technically illegal too. Inless you start copying huge amounts of DVD's and start flogging them as the original product no one is really going to care.

Exactly.  Microsoft then produces software with illegal inclinations.  As does Winamp, and countless other programs.  Ripping a CD and copying a DVD are the same thing to me, and they're both illegal.

But, I shall do some reading on CopyX.

Its not legal only in the US. In other places, rip away.

the most common protecton is CSS or content scrmbling system and is used on all hollywood DVD. This is of course easily bypassed with many common DVD copying software. In fact, a lot of DVD copying software, while not having native support for it, give you the ability to download a plugin that allows cracking of CSS; of course, they make you agree to a disclaimer saying your in a country that allows ripping, but you just click yes on those.

Oh and you need a DVD burning prefably with double layer support (most holywood dvd are on two layer dics) so you can make exact copies. If you don't have a double layer DVD burner, there is software that allows you to rip DL DVD's to 2 single layer discs. If you don't have a DVD burner at all, there is software that allows you to rip, and reformat the video and burn it to a cd. this is of course very bad and a lat resort only.

A dual layer DVD burner for your comp is very cheap nowadays with me seeign for one for about 70 bucks on newegg so its not exspensive.

Most of these programs I'm seeing offer "back-ups." I'm looking for something that'll turn a DVD into a movie file so I can extract frames and make little .gifs outta them.  I have the frickin' DVD, I don't need back-ups.  Maybe with game CDs would I want back-ups, because I actually move those CDs around a lot, but not my movies.

Ideas?

Hi, yes there is always a way around the Fences they build these days, some copy protection stuff is so strong it wont let DVD players play the disk !, so for my friends who have this problem their are 2 sollutions available.

DVD Shrink 3.2 which can be found as a free download from google.

and if that doesn,t work but you can still rip movies to Avi. then you can re-encode them with DVD Santa, which has a demo download via google, or torrentspy.com and find the full thing.

It still takes a few hours to do and uses 100% system power, but I hope this helps you.

And for the people who say it is wrong to do this, I say it is wrong in Australia for a family of 4 to pay $94,80. to see a movie. yes thats right. its a bloomin rip off to go to a cinema here.
