Strange Instructions

These are taken from Nvidias site to d/l drivers:

     
Driver Installation Hints

   * "Download Accelerator" utilities should be disabled when downloading any drivers.
   * Do not run virus protection software in the background while installing the drivers. This prevents the driver from configuring itself properly.
   * Before installing new drivers make sure you uninstall all NVIDIA display drivers from the Windows Control Panel. Browse to the Start Menu > Windows Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and search for "NVIDIA Windows Display Drivers" or "NVIDIA Display Drivers" and select remove.

Why not use a Download Accelerator? I have to.  :(

Doesn't it seem wierd to un-install your drivers? Shouldn't this be done in Win98 safe mode? And how do I start in safe?

I dunno Dan... ...!
I use Gozilla! to download my drivers and just install them over my existing drivers..seems to work O.K.
It's just that some of the latest drivers sometimes give me problems, in which case, I just re-install my "older" drivers.
(I keep all my drivers on a CD for re-use).... ...!

Disabling Norton when doing a driver installation is mostly a good idea...saves the 'puter thinking it's getting a virus installed... ...!

A download accerator may miss some bits of a file and with drivers you don't want a corrupt file, or some will download from more than one place (if set to do it) at one time that itself can corrupt a file.

As far as uninstalling previous drivers I have found with Nvida it is a must, some files won't overwrite or you'll end up with multiple files all which will cause problems.

Not too mention this is also the way Nvida recommends going about installing new ones, it is always best to follow instructions it will save you plenty headaches in the end!
You mention in your post that some of the latest drivers give you problems, this could be why.

I recommend Driver Cleaner, it will completely remove all traces of old drivers ensuring a fresh install.  It is easy to use with very good instructions.

Same with turning off your anti-virus, as it will probably scan the files you are installing and possibly cause the install to go bad.

True, true, but - I have alredy installed the new ones straight over! Seemed to work fine, but i'll do it differently next time.

I've had fewer, if any, real troubles installing straight over the old drivers in windows than I've had using driver cleaner....

I've had major probs after running driver cleaner to the point where a re-installation of windows was the only fix I could find, I couldn't get the op sys to load anymore.

After two consecutive occurences like that one, and a near fatality as well, I won't use driver cleaner again.

I'm not recommending installing straight over the old drivers or not using driver cleaner, I'm just reporting what happened to me.

You know Congo someone else mentioned the similar happened to them.
But I think what they did wrong was not using the "special Nvida" setting. Like stated in the instructions some Nivida registry enteries are need for some newer drivers to work, so when you use the "special" setting it leaves those alone.

The first time I used DC3 (cool ) I didn't use the "special filter" and that sis cause a corrupt install, so I re-installed the old driver, then used DC3 again only this time with the "special" setting enabled, and all worked well.
I know it also works with ATI drivers but couldn't give any comment on how well.
