Hello John,
Yeah i wish, I think if i sell the cockpit section after it's completed, i may just have enough money to get that system built  ;D.
I do have a very understanding wife, but even that lady has limits  :).

Keep those ideas coming though  ;D.

The dome idea is sound (that's how some big-time sims are done; the co. I worked for did a small one for a defense contractor awhile back but I didn't work on it), but might require multiple projectors, especially if you want multiple views. Then you get into meshing the images- a real headache, even on a flat surface.
However,if you're limited to one projector there are LCD projectors out now with remarkably good distortion correction built-in; they'll project on a multiplanar, concave or convex surface- even a dome- with virtually no distortion. Saw a demo of a new NEC unit last year- they centered the image in the corner where walls and ceiling meet, and it looked flat! It was amazing!! This one was also a DLP unit... gorgeous image quality. And of course, rather pricey. Can't quote prices offhand, but NEC makes a pretty wide range of units- check their website and/or contact them.
But for a less budget-busting solution, I'd recommend a single-projector RP setup, with a wide screen with just a little curve to it. You wouldn't really be able to look off the wingtip or check your six properly, but maybe as a compromise you could go with a multiple-output card and use smaller monitors or cheaper projectors for the side views.
As for flexible LCDs... haven't worked with them, but they've got to be mega-expensive and probably still buggy as hell. Interesting idea though...

As lame as this sounds, why don't you coat the dome in some sort of film (like taht stuff they use for screening movies), then hang a digital projector from the roof, (pointing down) and let it project the images onto the dome?
P.S This may work well or fail completly.

A small project upadate on the Spitfire build. While waiting for some technical information on thermo forming poloycarbonate sheet, i made the cockpit door catch and operating lever. This has no been completed, and with the technical info now at hand i can try forming the small top glazing panel to complete the front windscreen. Any lessons learned while making this will come in very handy when it comes to forming the canopy.

After getting side tracked by helping out on a couple of other projects, and trying to keep the Spitfire cockpit build moving forward, didn't leave any time for posting any updates.
The few parts i have managed to get on with include the raiator flap control lever, tank jettison lever and making a start on a replica Nose up/Down indicator.
