A few ideas came to my head:
1. It could possibly be dust causing it to overheat.. however given that FSX isn't really that intensive on the graphics processor I doubt this is the case. In any case first thing you should do it make sure it's not clogged with dust... you don't have to be too fussy about dust, as long as it is not clogged up with it.
2. Try under-clocking the card (core and memory) by 5%-10% (with i.e. rivatuner or msi afterburner) which sometimes fixes problems with artifacts.
3. If all that fails then try running a spare videocard if you have one.
4. Try returning the card with eVGA. As far as I know they offer 3 year warranties with there graphics cards so there is a possibility that you can get them to replace it. Since the GTX 285 has been out of production a while it's possible they'll ship you a shiny new graphics card for free. eVGA has really good support I hear.
5. Grab a GTX 570. It really is a great card and should run on a computer that can run a GTX 285 fine.
