Old PC on the fritz, looking to build FSX worthy PC

Its been a long time since I uninstalled my flight simulator games/addons, recently I caught the bug again from reading some threads here and really feel I want a system that can run FSX.

My old pc also seems to be dying so I am in the process of deciding to build a new one with the intent of running FSX.

I have drawn up a spec list below based on posts in the sticky above but I want to make sure it is all ok before I go ahead.


Ok I have edited the spec list based on suggestions,

Instead of a 920 D0 I put a 930 D0.
Changed graphics card to another 285 that was actually in stock.
Also put up that I am considering 5850/5870.
Changed heatsink from Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme to Thermalright Venemous X due to it being superior.
Added thermal 1300 or 1600 RPM fan for heat sink.
Added WD Velociraptor 300GB (If I have enough money).
Changed PSU from Corsair TX-750 to Corsair HX-650.
Changed Case to Coller Master Haf RC-932.

Go with the i7 930, that has replaced the i7 920.

The Thermalright Venomous X has replaced the Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme 1366 (TRUE) as the best.  You will need a fan since the Venomous X does not come with one.  Thermalright also sells a great 2,000 RPM 120mm * 25mm fan, they also sell a shroud that the fan fits into and clips right onto the HS.  The Venomous X performs better than the V8.

If you can afford it you should put FSX on its own drive and the WD Velociraptor is a great one.  Get the 300GB if you can.

Get the Core i7 930

The Seasonic X-series is my favorite PSU at the moment. It's very stable, EXTREMELY efficient, modular... etc. Definitely better than Corsair TX series, IMO. It is slightly comparable, but better than the Corsair HX-650, which is also a really good PSU. If they are both too much then the TX-650 should still be decent.

I'd rather Radeon 5870, it should give relatively similar performance to the GTX 285... only the 5870 is faster in non-fsx applications, uses less power, is quieter, and has more features. GTX 480 might be faster than both but I am not sure how it performs in fsx specifically.

From your suggestions I think I will switch the 920 D0 for a 930 D0 then. The reason for going with 920 over 930 in the first place was because I read some posts by NickN (sadly I never got to meet them), from his and other peoples posts here is where I drew up the specs from.
I had also been reading that the 920 overclocks aswell

I decided to go with the 5870 because after looking at more reviews it seems it comes out on top over the GTX 285 (for a similar price), runs quiter/cooler and I suppose it wont run FSX any less well  .


Changed the RAM because of height issues with the new HSF Ive decided to go with, plus the OCZ RAM is cheaper.
