Blow out

Postby ShaneG_old » Wed Jan 13, 2010 8:32 am

Last night, my PSU fried itself (sparks out the back, and it fused the on/off switch)

Is there a reason to think that it may have done any damage
to my HD's ?

The PSU was several years old, so I was kind of expecting something
to go wrong sooner or later, but I'm more than a little concerned about what else I may have lost.

Hi ShaneG

My understanding is occasionally when a power supply goes it can damage computer components. I think it has something to do with the safety ratings the PSU has, but I am not sure. I think the best thing you can do it try the computer out on a different PSU.

My idea of testing them is take them out and try them on a different PC. If the BIOS doesn't recognize them, or you hear nothing with them, I say they would be fried.

Installed a new 800w PSU today, and everything is fine.

Seems to run better than the 500w unit ever did. Same maker, but clearly different market segments.
