Back At Work and New i7 System

Postby Plugpennyshadow » Thu Apr 02, 2009 8:57 pm

Im back at work full time from my back surgery and just got income tax return in from thos bastar...I mean, those nice people at the IRS.

Taking aim at an i7 machine.

Nick, what board, chip and memory modules would you get?  I been researching myself, of course, but I would like for you advice.

Here are my choices:

Mobo:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131351

Chip:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115201

Ram:
Need advice on this...

And Im getting the usual suspects, Thermaright cooler, fans, good single rail PSU, gonna transfer my SATA controller card from the other PC to the new one, and getting two new drives for the i7 FSX manchine.  XP pro and the Nick uber-tweak to finish it off.

I am pulling the trigger, so to speak.

Thank you gents, Im gonna pull the trigger on those hardware orders in a moment.

My bro-in-law has a new Gateway i7 based machine with an ATI vid card in it.  He doesn't do the FS thing, but World of Warcraft and my sister does all the family home business stuff as well as personal records on it.  The machine is just stock awesome out to the box.  I decided to waste...I mean donate ye ol' tax refund to getting myself out of the hinterlands of hardware.

Having said that, my current system is now clocked up to 3.0ghz and is stable as can be.  Mucho thanks to all and your advice...Most thanks to a new friend who is willing to spend the time helping me here in TX.  Though he had me bring HIM the machine instead of coming to my place this time!  How rude!  LOL

Onwards and upwards or sideways or anywhich way but loose...

The Bad Penny has spoken his thanks...Rejoice!  or not.  Your choice...

One more question.  What are the benefits of XP 64 Pro over 32bit?  Aside from the advantage of the upper limit on memory that can be recognized and used.

I feel 32bit XP Pro is the best bet for me as I want to retain usage of some of my legacy hardware and software as long as I can.  The old NX2 Creative SoundBlaster external sound card Ive been using for years now is a great complement to my Audigy 4 internal.  I use the external for headset sound and the internal for all the other in game sound.  Really like the realistic effect of hearing ATC and some friends I noodle around with thru the headset without mixing in with plane sounds.  No XP Pro64 drivers for the NX2...You see my dilema?

Thanks...

With your new system you will be able to push up the sliders. You will need the 64 bit OS to accomplish this without OOM (Trust Me). Gotta ask yourself, are you upgrading for sound or visuals. My guess would be the visuals as the ATC in FSX doesnt usually stutter like FSX would on a low end system. ;D

Nick,

I dont use the onboard sound.  Plugging in an addon card cuts off onboard sound in my board.  I have an internal Creative Audigy 4 for all sounds in FSX that dont include voice.  I have an external Creative NX2 external USB card for ATC, Voice coms, Ventrilo and such.  Drivers were written for XP and Vista 32bit but not for XP or Vista64.

Sorry for the cornfusion.  Im just trying to maintain some of my legacy hardware as long as I can.  Besides, I like the card mounted on the desk just beside the yoke.  I like the convenience of just reaching over and hitting the mute button or adjusting the volume with the rotary.

Ive researched and found an external card that has drivers and will pick this up if I just have to.

Guess I could just get the GoFlight communications module.  USB and drivers for every OS out there.

The Bad Penny clears up the cornfusion!  I hope...

And I am still waiting on my new hardware...How rude of Newegg to not have my stuff delivered by transporter.  I sent them the beaming cords!  Instead they insisted on sending it UPS?!  Rude, just rude...

And I would have forgotten to order the case!  Gonna have to wait LONGER for that!  What fun...
