Time for a new build - thoughts?

Postby Celtman » Thu Feb 26, 2009 12:00 pm

First off, hello everyone :) It's ages since I've been on here, just caught the flight sim bug again though  ;D

Anyway, I'm looking at a new PC build, mainly around FSX but also other games. My budget is around

Go for a GTX285... anything above that has heat problems. yea ATi is good

the memory... get DDR3 1600... that'll be much better and give you much more room for the OC

the cooler for the i7... well I think the best coolers are these:

http://www.thermalright.com/new_a_page/ ... 366rt.html

you can get them for about $60-$80. they do the job ;)

and yes, if you're going to build a new system, it might as well be an i7. you'll be happy when you're running FSX without any worries and it's looking great ;)

Id seriously consider the 4870..especially the 4870x2. It is a really good card, i came across from Nvidia and was worth the wait and the money

Happy building  :)

Two video cards will do nothing for FSX. Go for the GTX 295.
Don't use a cooler made for 775, get the Thermalright 120 1366
Get 1600 memory.
Most here are going with the Asus P6T Deluxe motherboard.
The i7 is significantly better and worth every penny!

Overclock the i7 and fly away!

Thanks for the help, DDR3 1600 is on the cards now I think.

One question about the GTX295, will it actually run FSX WORSE than the 285? Because this system will be used for other games too, so if it runs FSX the same, it would be worth getting for performance in other games?

Or are the temps just too high?

Thanks  8-)

I have a single GTX 260 (look at my specs down in my sig) and it runs Crysis and any other game I throw at it like a dream and no lag whatsoever. I would imagine a single GTX 285 would run it even better. I've played Crysis, FarCry2, CoD World at War, and of course FSX and they all run like a dream with this setup.

another thing is the price. the 295 is over $500 while the 285 is found for less than $350 and EASILY overclockable. my 260 is up to 670mhz from 576mhz, and the memory on it is from 999 to 1200 with temps running quite low for today's standards! (stock cooling)

Thanks very much for that :) I'll go for the GTX285 then, seems like the 295 isn't worth the price increase at all 8-)

Just a quick update:

Is the ASUS P6T motherboard (this one: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/159360 ) The same as/better than the Foxconn one I posted in my original post? It's quite a bit cheaper......

Thanks,
Celtman 8-)

Change powersupply to PC POWER & COOLING 750 WATT, or maybe one of the more better Corsair (TX750), or Silverstone.

ASUS P6T.

GTX 285.

I THINK DDR3-1600 is better for OC'ing (don't use an i7 myself :( ).

Also, get a Thermalright TRUE cpu cooler.

Also, you don't need more thhan 6gb. Just get one DDR3-1600 kit for 6gb total.

Sorry for so many questions  :P Think I've got it now....

So: Asus P6T
6GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM
PC Power & Cooling 750W PSU
GTX 285
i7 920
Thermalright Cooler

Sound ok? I guess 12GB is useless on current games over 6GB then? Can always upgrade later I suppose :)

Thanks for all the help guys  8-) Much appreciated  :)

Looks good. But... you still need an HDD. Unless of course you already have one. But whatever you get, make sure it's at least a SATA II drive. Preferably, get one of these two to run just FSX in them:
