Question about the i7

Postby machineman9 » Wed Feb 11, 2009 2:09 pm

I was just reading about it on cclonline, and I read this line in the specifications section:

"Intel EM64T (Intel EM64T requires a computer system with a processor, chipset, BIOS, operating system, device drivers and applications enabled for Intel EM64T. Processor will not operate (including 32-bit operation) without an Intel EM64T-enabled BIOS. Performance will vary depending on your hardware and software configurations.)"

So it requires a special BIOS to work? Is EM64T sort of a new and generally well used thing, or is it much more specialised? I am just wondering how one would know if it is compatible. I know about 32-bit and 64-bit in terms of memory, but I am just wondering how any why this is affected.

Cheers

EM64T is basically Intel's branding for its 64 bit architecture, so it isn't anything special or aboe x64. Anything 64 bit will work with it.

plus this chip requires a compatible socket 1366 motherboard... so it'll most likely include the new technology anyways

sorry to hijack the post, but since we're on the same subject, i was thinking of building an i7 system myself, and i was wondering if my trusty 8800 GTX 768 is still good for such a build

i'd only change the CPU, Mobo and memory... leaving the HDs and video card as they are for now... i simply don't have enough money for a full overhaul, so i' hoping the 8800 will do  ;)

Cheers

Of course there is always something better but I think your 8800GTX will suffice.

EM64T has been around since the late Pentium 4.. back then not everything supported it... that was four years ago... all i7 and Core 2 duo motherboards should support EM64T and thus 64 bit right out of the box. You don't need to change anything to activate or use it; there MIGHT be a 64 bit option in BIOS regarding power saving options or something though.

8800GTX is still a good card for MSFS, however, I would try and get GTX 260 / 285.

If you're going from an 8800 I would only consider a 280/285. Anything other than that would be a slight downgrade.

Cool thanks!! i don't have any money for a 280/285... so i guess the 8800GTX will have to do for now... good to know it's still a good card  :)
