Poor FPS in FS9 & FSX. Any reason why?

Postby thainoodle » Mon Jan 12, 2009 6:28 pm

Hi, I have recently put a pc together for flying my sim, was using a laptop before but without any dedicated graphics memory so it struggled a bit! Anyway, built this machine, the specs are:
2.75mhz dual core intel
3gig of ram
Nvidia Geforce 8800 gtx 768mb
22"hanns g  tft

Now I'd have thought that this would have run fs9 superbly on high settings and fsx on medium high but fsx isnt even playable and fs9 seems to average 8-20fps running 1680X1050X32 with, admittedly everything turned up high, and some scenery add ons (vfr scenery, uk200 airports) and active sky v6. But it suns poo, especially in cloud or near traffic. It can run quite well with weather set to clear skies but thats missing the point, I would have thought that this machine would handle it seeing as lesser setups manage ok.

I have done some searching, I asked on another forum and was directed here. I have done the tweaks in the fs9.cfg file and have installed nhancer. These helped but not much.

Its worth noting that when I installed fs9 I was running a 7300gs 256mb and I upgraded to the gtx, could this be an issue? fs9 seems to recognise the new card ok

Any advice would be handy, this question probably gets asked all the time!

Cheers!

That's odd, I can't see why you would get Bad Fps :-/

Welcome to Simviation!  :)

According to the specs and info, you should at least be able to get decent performance on the FS9, I'm going to say try turning your resolution down some and see if that helps. I don't even think that had resolution of that kind when they made FS9. :D
Try 1024x768x32.

Most VFR (of the photo variety) will put a reasonable hit on performance, as will weather, default traffic is another killer (try WOAI if you haven't already, easier on the frames)

For nice weather while flying, without killing performance, and having a realistic flying enviroment:

go to-- user defined weather-customize weather-advanced settings-visibility: set the tops to 99,999 and the visibility slider to no more than 30nm. Then place clouds as desired. The less distant objects the system has to draw, the better off it will be. Try it, you'll like it. ;)

Hope some of this helps. If not, the real experts will be along soon. ;D ;)

are you using the latest graphics drivers for your video card?

they can be found here:
guru3d.com

in the downloads section

have you gone to windows update and downloaded all the critical updates? (which OS are you using anyways?)

when you do all that, go through this setup guide written by Nick Needham. make sure you follow each and every instruction down to the punctuation mark!

http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2 ... 1208959973

that should improve performance on the system by a lot... try it and see what happens then get back to us if you're still having trouble

Hi, I'm using the most up to date drivers for my graphics card.

I'll give the NickN bits a try, have read a lot of his posts so trust his knowledge!

I'm running XP pro SP2

Default traffic is off, I have the adobe traffic pack installed. Not keen on turning the resolution down to be honest as it looks so sweet as it is! Will be worth a try though but the blockyness will put me off!

Will have a mess tonight and see how I get on!

Thanks

I can't help you much with FS9, as most of the little knowledge I have (learned from Nick) is on FSX

go ahead and post screenshots of your FSX settings so we can take a look at that. honestly, throwing that resolution down won't do too much. remember, it's not about frames, it's about smoothness

At least on my setup, when I had the resolution cranked up, I had a nice stutter-show,
and when I lowered it to the screenshot size here, it really got nice and smooth, so it has to do something. :-?

It would seem to me that the higher the resolution, the more detail and information the system has to process and draw on the screen.
And if the sims are not very GPU dependent, then that must mean that the CPU is taking part of that hit as well.

I know that frames aren't important, but I can keep a steady smooth 30fps on my system with all sliders to the right, and the OP's system easily tops mine.

So for me to have better frame rates and smoothness than he does, doesn't make sense.

And I have never done Nicks XP tweaks. Imagine what I could get if I did. ;) (Holding off for the fresh install that I know is coming soon :-/ ;) )

Or I could be spouting utter madness! ;D

Just a quick thought, has anyone got the nHancer settings for fs9? I could only find NickN's settings for FSX.

Thanks

Well I have finished doing nick's tweaks and although my pc starts a hell of a lot quicker and my fps has gone up I'm still getting stutters in the game and its still quite slow to load objects. Any ideas anyone? I'm wondering if it could be my drive thats the problem, or the old drive I have attached purely for storage?

Thanks

tune FSX and be aware your processor speed is not what I would call high end

Use this list to set up FSX and the config
