New i7 System

thanks Nick:   the truth is I am like so many flightsimmers.  This is the only game I play.  The first person shooters and war strategy games are not my cup of tea.  I am interested only in flying, and the enjoyment of flying in so many places and so many aircraft through increasingly improved and realistic programmes.

You know Windows 7 and FS11 are dead easy if Microsoft thinks it through.  All they have to do is cut out the garbage, dead weight and poor design features from Vista and FSX and they have highly marketable products with little effort.

Bring back Phil Taylor!

Here is my follow-up...I started this thread.

Just installed:
GIGABYTE GA-EX58-EXTREME
i7 940
750watt PSU
XFX 8800 Ultra
CORSAIR DOMINATOR 6GB 1600mhz Timing 8-8-8-24

I was going to order the mushkin 1600mhz Latency 6, but the website was down and I needed to order the ramm immediately so it would arrive with the shipment. I also did not install the Thermaltake 120 extreme fan just yet...will do that soon.

Everything fired up on first boot and has been running stable for 3 days now. I have not yet tried OC'ing. I will do this when I can lift up my skirt and grab my B_lls lol. Obviously Ive spend the last 24 hours reinstalling FSX addons and constantly doing defrags. Remember I have just about every addon you can purchase for FSX (non aircraft related)

Overall I'm very impressed with the computers stock performance running FSX. Coming from AMD dual core, it is a BIG BIG performance increase. I dont understand why I have cheated myself out and not done the right thing by buying an Intel Chip in the past. All you AMD chip users out there who are reading this thread......it is time to make the leap to intel or stop whinning about how to tweak an AMD processor to make FSX perform...it just aint gona happen (Sorry). Trust me...it works and you will be thoroughly pleased with the results. I havent made any long flights yet, I just did some quick flights in the dense area's I fly in. The performance isnt perfect but its nearl what I wanted to accomplish.

clocking is easy...   bump BCLOCK up... I posted a video about clocking i7 that should be easy to follow. You dont need to jump to 4GHz and can clock it up to about 3.3-3.4 with the default heatsink

Use these 2 posts to set up FSX and tune it. Follow the link in the first post to the settings and make sure to MATCH them all then start tuning from the list I posted in the items that need to come DOWN in sliders..

Nick and colleagues:  My tech says that he has installed two GTX280s and both have either overheated, or have an overheat alarm set too low.  They were from different manufacturers but of course the same nVidia 280 GPU.

In all of these forums I have seen no evidence that the card requires ancillary heating at normal clock speeds.

Is this a familiar problem, or is it aberrent?  I would be grateful for advice before I become the owner of two GPUs.

Thanks for the OC'ing tips Nick. Ill take a look at it.

I know how you feel about Gigabyte, but I was able to OC my rig by using the Gigabyte Utility called EasyTune6. I got it to 3.3mhz and the CPU temps never exceeded 50C with the stock fan. I did a 3 hour flight with no Blue Screens....everything seems to be running great.

Unfortunately you can not have a ATI and a Nvidia card in a system at the same time..

I would say your tech was in for a hell of a day trying to accomplish that

Whoops;  Australian irony and American humour do not quite mix ... as I found out in 1970 as a post-doc at UCLA.

There will only be one video card - the GTX 280.

Nick: the i7 overclocking video probably seemed like school stuff to you, on the other hand it went quickly over things you probably take for granted.

Is there a simple cookbook version of that video.

Like enter Bios setup..
reduce x to its lowest,
reduce y to its lowest,...

It seemed to me that there were several crucial steps before tackling the BClock, and I would certainly stuff them up.

Glad we were on the same page ...  now that would give the BIOS indigesion if I put a 280 into harness with a 4780x2!
