Of Video Cards and Motherboards...

Postby Ferrari308guy » Sat Aug 30, 2008 4:57 pm

Hey All,

I just purchased a new EVGA GTX260 896MB Graphics Card...only to find that it doesn't fit in my motherboard (not that the slot is incorrect, but that it doesn't fit physically in the case

It doesn't require 2 pci-e slots to plug into, it just needs 2 slots physically so it can fit, it just covers up another slot, which can be PCI-E, AGP, PCI, etc.

Yes, the way the card would be oriented in my computer, it can only fit into 1 PCI-E slot physically, I don't have another slot behind that becuase the PCI-E slot is the last slot in the row.

Sorry if this doesn't make any sense, I can post a pic if you need it.

I know what you mean, and I did it with my 9800 GTX+, though the SATA cables were in the way and I broke 'em on accident...

They're huge.

You may need a bigger case, which is always cheaper than a new motherboard.

Well, I thought I could just cut off the metal on the card where it would hook up to the second slot, that way it would just fit in the one slot. But I don't really know if I want to do that.

What exactly did you do with your 9800?

Well, my case can't fit it in there, so I squeezed the plastic in, moved my HDD next to my CD-drive (I'm using a mini tower, mind you), and then I moved the sata cables to different ports that were still SATA cable ports, and while doing so, the HDD one snapped, so I got a new one (from an old computer), and it is working now...
I did break off some of the metal in the case though, so it would fit.

Well, my card fits in there. It's just that I can't actually sit it in the PCI-E slot becuase I only have one of them like I said. So..that's why I'm not really sure what to do about it. I didn't think a new case would help me becuase that's not the problem, it's the slots. So that's why I thought it was the motherboard....

If you put it in right, as long as there isn't a card in the slot right next to the V-card, it will fit in fine and all is well...

It only plugs into 1 slot, but it needs a 2nd cover slot for cooling, not to plug into that slot...

Yeah, that's the thing, It fits in fine next to the slot where it actually plugs into, but it won't fit into the second slot because there isn't one. That's why I think I need a new motherboard.

Ok....

Is this any better?

My PCI-E slot is the last slot in the row, so I don't have a slot adjacent to it, and therefore, the card will not fit in my computer.

found your issue ;D

In all seriousness  though that is weird. usually there is a blank space that you can open up on the case above the highest spot. not necessarily a mother board issue but rather a case issue. because if you went and got a new mother board it most likely wouldn't fit.

if you wanted to spend a little extra go for a new case and motherboard and memory and keep your existing processor and fan(maybe you may need a new fan)

So just to be sure,
You're saying to go get a computer case that has that opening for the blank space you were talking about?

I'm all for it, but I'm worried that if I get a new case, I might not get the right size, and I"m not even sure how I move everything over to a new case. Are cases in standard sizes? And will I be sure that everything will fit in there? Anything you can say that will raise my confidence  :D

You need a new case + motherboard, that is messed up how the PCI slots are up top...
