How do you know!?!?

Postby Mike.. » Thu Aug 28, 2008 11:42 pm

Well. it's done. Vista 64 bit recognizes all 8 gigs by itself. My new Zalman is doing it's job cooling the Q6600. (still at 2.4 but I am going to OC). Which , until installing, had no idea that I would be totally tearing down my rig to get the backing plate on the other side of my mother-board. Hard and tricky work but finally worth it. Anyway.......

Both 8800 GTS SSC Editions are online via SLI as far as I can tell only because when I went to display settings I have a choice of 4 monitors now though only one is connected.

How can I tell they are working in unison?Does the video card only recognize a game or two to work or is there something else I need to do to test they are both working at the same time to achieve the desired effect? At 640 DDR 3 each I thought I would see something other than monitor changes off the bat. Especially in 64 Bit. When you go to display settings in Vista it still says 16 or 32 color. No 64?

Confused but eager to learn..

Mike

I just went to FSX to do a test flight. With Ultimate Traffic , UTX USA, Ultimate terrain, FEX, in the Abacus Super Hornet, at Seattle......I only got a max of............LMAO.........6.4 FPS! Surely something is wrong with my settings..........right?

Nick, if your reading this then you must remember awhile back when you posted some settings for me to try to see where my rig was running and I would post shots in the same thread to show what was going on with my rig by the postings you showed on where to set them. I havn't changed a thing since then except to change my setup with 4 more gis of RAM and an additional vid card (identical) with 640 DDR 3 as well. What am I doing wrong?

Just so there is no confusion

First of all - don't use the Abacus Super Hornet. I don't think it is an FSX compliant model, and it WILL suck up frames.

What are your current settings in FS? I think the number one reason people get low frames, is the fact that after spending a good deal of time planning their rigs, and spending all their money, they expect to be able to push their sliders to the max, and run it at an acceptable level.

I have a Pentium 4, 3.2 Ghz, with an Nvidia 8800GT, over Sydney, I get as low as 12 FPS, but it averages about 16 - 20. I have no traffic, and autogen set to normal. I think you might be pushing your settings too high.  ;)

Mike,

If you spent less than $1,000,000.00 USD on that rig then that is the correct FPS figure.   ;)

best,

FS is not made to be run at full sliders... there is no computer that can run that decently, no matter how fast...

try to find the best settings that will still give you a decent performance...  tweaking the FS settings is a balance issue... you can't simply turn all sliders up to max, as that will slow even an 8 core rig to a crawl... you have to find that sweet spot where the sim looks good but doesn't run like a slideshow

... BTW, i wish i had a rig like that... my Pentium D 3.4 is aging FAST... and overheating  ::)

Cheers

My sliders are not set to max. If you click on the link in my post you will see a number of setting screens that Nick posted for me to try followed by a few screens I took with the fps showing. The settings in thos pics are the settings I have had on my rig PRIOR to adding 4 more gigs of ram and the extra 8800 GTS SSC w/640 DDR 3 and As I liked where they were and I could fly pretty decent I left them alone. NOW I have the extra card and memory on board and though I would get at least another 4-8 fps. I know from the post link above there isn't a snowballs chance in Florida that it would run at max. Nick let me know that right off the bat and have more than excepted that if you don't have the rig Bill Gates has at his office to run flight sim I am going to have to settle for 10-25.

Just thought I could get a little boost is all. In total I think in the rig alone since Jan 08 I have close to 2400 USD invested. I know Crysis is going to be sweet to play again though. COD 4 too ;D

Mazza, if you had 128 gigs of RAM, but a Pentium III and an Nvidia 6800, FSX would not run at full settings.

I doubt it, but SLI might be killing your frames, considering FSX isn't coded to use the GPU over the CPU.

yes, FS takes it's toll on the CPU more than anything else...
and i have heard that SLI doesn't do much for FSX except if you're running it at a very high resolution...

try OC'ing your CPU (you said you would anyway), a higher clock could make a difference

;) and i think not even mr Gates rig could run FSX at max... one of these days we're gonna have to hi-jack IBM's new Roadrunner supercomputer and try FS on it... maybe we'd see a *slight* performance boost  ;D

Cheers

Ulitmate traffic is garbage.. its models are lead weights for FSX

As for high settings...

http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_p ... 607#149607

except car traffic should be 8 with the latest UTX patch and I would probably drop AL/GA down too

Your not on a high speed system especially if not overclocked

and defrag the hell out of that thing too

I dont use Vista and now you know why

make sure you have updated video drivers and also make sure you have all the DX updates too

So, I need to let Ultimate traffic go. I am looking for the latest drivers as we speak. I need to download the latest Ultimate Terrain Patch, and I have since yesterday used O&O to defrag the hell out of my computer.

You lost me at DX updates though...Oh wait, you mean Direct X right?

I went to the Flight1 website and couldn't seem to find the UTX patch. You wouldn't happen to have a direct link would you?

UTX is scenery solutions, not F1.. F1 is just their distributor
