Upgrading need help though!!!

Postby haphadon » Tue Jul 08, 2008 1:51 pm

Ok I have decided to upgrade my computer. I would like to upgrade my CPU but not sure if my motherboard will work ok with my new CPU. I am also upgrading the power supply.

Here are my current spec's:

MotherBoard: Acer F690GVM
Processors: 2.1 GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+
Graphics Card: Geforce 8600 GT 256 MB
Ram: 2 Gigs of DDR2 RAM (2048 MegaByte)
Power Supply: 250 Watt Power Supply
Operating System: Windows Vista 32 bit

This is what power supply I was thinking of buying:

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/ ... CatId=1483

And here is what CPU I was thinking of buying:

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/ ... -AM2-6400A

or

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/ ... 1-AM2-9850

Will both CPU's work with my current motherboard? And is the power supply a good enough power supply to run either one of those for its price???

Thanks in advanced,

You're seeing the light  :)

If you're going to be looking at an 8800, like you say.. you might as well be looking at the Phenom too.. which means a new board/PSU..

B U T    ... if you're going that route (board, CPU, v-card and all).. you really should think Intel. Building a new AMD machine right now, doesn't make sense.

One place you don't want to skimp, is the mother-board. Just glancing at that one.. you can see that it has on-board-video. It's obviously already cheap, and that any of its value is used up with onboard video (which you'll never use) makes you wonder just how "cheap" everyting else is. It's not the foundation for a new-build using high-end components.

As for the CPU...  We're already two years into the quad-core era.. so a Q6600 is your bare minimum CPU.

Look for a board with a newer chipset (780i/790i, X38/X48) that supports DDR3 RAM.. and go from there.
