Time to upgrade!

Postby GreaseMonkey » Tue Jul 01, 2008 3:27 pm

Its coming up to my birthday and well i have  decided to upgrade my graphics card, even though myn still does a great job. im thinking to get the,
"XPERTVISION 512MB GeF 9800GTX PCI-E 2.0 RETAIL" heres the link,

http://www.ginger6.com/xpertvision-512m ... 30542.html

bit of a stupid question but, isnt it a tad cheap for one of the high end 9 series?? ive heard rumours that we should stick with the 8 series for now but i dont know what to do!? i know that the card has a LOT of power and im looking for it to last for a while...i dont really know much about the 9 series, my knowledge is of  the 8, so any help will be greatly appreciated.

the only let down with the 8600GTS is its only a 128 bit memory interface wereas this is 256... money isnt an issue by the way..

thanks!

and one more thing the reason why i have chosen such a high end card is because when i and if i buy this i want it to last...quite a long time and i know that nvidia tend to bring out new cards like i eat hot meals.

And the 8600GTS isnt that great either. It will suit you if you need something for low-mid graphics on newer games and high graphics on older games... but overall it is a fairly bad card. I was so annoyed when I did a week's worth of work to buy my 8600GTS to have the 8800GT come out about 2 months later. Oh well.

You want something to last you longer... don't get the 8600GTS.

Its not all just about memory bitage either....

8600GTS:
Core clock speed: 675Mhz
Shader clock speed: 1450Mhz
Memory clock: 1000Mhz
Memory interface:  128bit
Memory bandwidth (GB/s): 32
Texture fill rate (billion /s): 10.8

9800GTX:
Core clock speed: 675Mhz
Shader clock speed: 1688Mhz
Memory clock: 1100Mhz (2 cores I think, or so Ginger6 says... making that 2200Mhz)
Memory interface:  256bit
Memory bandwidth (GB/s): 80.4
Texture fill rate (billion /s): 43.2

So yeh, check the last 3 or 4 figures on each card, they are the greatest leaps. The texture fil rate is 4 times bigger... so textures will load up on the models a lot quicker and will give some much better FPS.

The 9800GTX is the better option, even if it costs that fair bit more.

If money isn't an issue check out Nvidia's new card, the GTX 280.

1GB Memory
2214+MHz Memory Clock
512-bit Memory interface
240 Stream processors
602+Mhz Core Clock

Compare this with the last, best for FSX the 8800Ultra

768MB Memory
2160+ MHz Memory Clock
384-bit Memory Interface
128 Stream Processors
612+ MHz Core clock

You could also OC an 8800GTX to get the same results as the Ultra. 8-)

Just quoting Nicks view on a review of the 280 against the Ultra... it appears that for FSX the GTX/Ultra is still the best way to go...

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nvidia-gtx-280,1953-15.html

Keeping in mind the 8800 Ultra is a SINGLE core card and a 8800GTX can be clocked to Ultra specs, are there really any questions?     ;D

Nv is a joke and a major rip off past the 8800
