3870X2 + 3870?

Postby Flying Mouse » Tue Jun 10, 2008 4:53 am

Would it be possible/advisable to add 1 HD3870 into crossfire with my 3870X2?

My mobo is PCI 2.0

I have 2 PCI express slots.

Will my PSU be strong enough? 700W Thermaltake Toughpower Modular.

My 3870X2 is an ASUS, does it mean my 3870 should be ASUS too?

Would it make a worthwhile difference in FSX?

Thanking helpers in advance!!

If you could, I doubt it would make a huge dent in FSX's motherload of power ;S.

3 way Crossfire I haven't heard of, though I have heard of 3 way SLI, but even then, it was 3 single cards, not a X2 and a single card.

A quick google says a maybe/no. At the moment it doesn't appear that the crossfire drivers support 3 gpus in crossfire, only 2 or 4. That is unless it sees the X2 as a single card. in this case you will suffer as the X2 will lose performance due to the load sharing, thus your back to using the power of two 3870s, not a 3870 and X2. The best way to go for crossfire is two X2s in crossfire, and watch FSX fly.

Here's your answer: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/sho ... p?t=179665

It works, but it is hit and miss. With the amount of problems with FSX/DX10 I wouldn't be surprised if it made things worse

Thanx for the advice+link.

I guess I will wait just a tiny little longer for the 3870 to drop in price. I'll also upgrade my CPY to AM2+. Luckily my mobob is AM2+ compatible.

Seems that onlt then it will be viable.

Thanx.

Yeah, I wouldn't do it if I were you, I would just go Quad Crossfire, because, as you said, you were going to wait for it to go down in price, which means it's dual counterpart will too.

And anyways, I think that the 3 way Crossfire is kinda crappy compared to 4 way crossfire.

Also, if you do go AM2+, I'd look at triple core phenoms along with the quad core ones, as I know that in an issue of "CPU", the 8X50's are great for multitasking, while the computer thinks it only has 2 cores, therefore giving background power ;D.

But if you go phenom X4, go for the black editions, just so you can get better performance AND overclock in a custom way ;P.

To run crossfireX you also need a board with the AMD 790FX chipset.
Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe
Intel I7 3770K w/ Corsair H100
Thermaltake Level 10 GT
Silverstone 1000W PSU

As far as I am concerned you need an AMD 7XX chipset.

My mobo in the mannual state it to be 4 way crossfire compatible. That means I can also run 2x 3870X2.

Thanx all for the help  ;)
