[quote]So far so good with me (knock wood).. that last driver, with Nhancer seems to be working.

Yes.. I'm fully up-to-date... SP1 in Vista... Acceleration in FSX, and a host of hot-fixes.

These glass gauges are like little apps themselves.. lotsa coding. Somehow, that throws a wrench into what's trying to be displayed. Does the gauge crash ? .. does it cause FSX to crash ? ..

[quote]Brett, have you ever been able to run FSX without any issues?

Just finished checking my ram with Memtest86+ and it passed without errors.

Here's a little info I found:

On another board a user described a similar glitch and solved it by moving his 8800 graphics card from a PCI-E 2.0 slot into a PCI-E 1.0 slot.

Re: 8800GTS..  Vista 64  weird crash..

Postby evilbobguy » Sat May 17, 2008 2:08 am

Hey. I don't do flight sim, but this is the most related thread I can find for my problem, which is weirdly similar.

My issues occur (pretty much always) while playing videos.
The video will corrupt (pink/purple/green lines),
My mouse will distort (the actual arrow will appear about 1cm to the right of where the mouse will actually click, and where the mouse will actually click there are about 3-4 lines of the pointer arrow) ..
About 3-10 seconds after this occurs, my system will lock up / reboot.

I have checked memory with MemTest86+, appeared fine.
Used RivaTuner to increase fan speed (and increase gamma for FPS's I play), thinking it was perhaps heat related. Still occured, heat levels seemed fine.
Stressed Graphics card as much as I could, The error didn't occur.
Considered it could be a mobo issue, but no way to test that theory at the moment.

I realise that this is a flight sim forum, but I found the similarities interesting.

System Specs:
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 (64-Bit) - (Cut down with vLite)

GFX: XFX Alpha Dog 8800GTS 512 (Bios Version: 62.92.16.00.39 , Driver Version: Forceware 175.16 (occured with earlier beta drivers also)
Mobo: Asus Striker II Formula (With latest bios)
CPU: Intel Q9450
Mem: 8GB of Corsair XMS2 Twin2X DDR2 800MHZ, CL5

I am hoping it's just a weird/rare NVidia/Vista compatibility thing.

Don't really expect help, just thought it'd be good to let you know the problem isn't entirely flight sim based, it seems. (Assuming the problems are indeed, the same)

Regards.

Wow. Found an even more related thread. Posting for anyone following the trail to a source of information:

evilbobguy,

I checked the link you posted and saw this thumbnail:

Image

Those are the exact same artifacts that appear on my gauges right before everything locks up and crashes.

Although I've never experienced any problems with videos similar to the ones described in the other forums, I am assuming this is the same issue.

Evilbobguy...  your description of what happens to the mouse pointer is EXACTLY what happens to my pointer, when the gauges go goofy..

I finally took a long, 737 flight, and it happened again *sigh*

I'm gonna read that link.. but right now, this seems to be a  Vista-64 / nVidia issue. Those are the constants.

Here's an update...

I did a clean install up to SP1...   It's working fine. But here's what's weird. My mouse pointer is black, until it's on something clickable; then it's white.

Hmmmm ... :-?

uh huh

Now I see the issue... this is actually not an x64 vista problem.. this is the same issue Nv had with Quicktime and Apple video format with the 8800 series G80 and x64 XP. For almost a year when certain G80 products would try to enter a website running QT apple format movies ... and clicked to watch the video one of two things would happen''

1. The video would display with the same lines and corruption as shown above

2. IE would crash and close

So this is not something new with x64. Although they did resolve the QT/G80 issue (only took the idiots almost a year) with drivers it appears this has creeped into the newer cores and vista

But, but... I've got a G92 8800Gts..

Edit:..  Oh yeah.. you said, "newer" cores..  n-mind.

I can live without Acceleration, and as far as I know, SP2 was mainly about making Non-Acceleration installations play nice with Acceleration in multi-player... I'll install SP2 by itself (no Accleration) and report back..

I'm not going to expect much from this and I don't want to create false hope but here's a statement from Nvidia:

http://nvidia.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/nvid ... _topview=1

We'll see what happens next week.....

UPDATE:

From Nvidia (note info in bold):

NVIDIA is aware of reports of graphical corruption when playing videos with certain platform and graphics card configurations. We have been able to reproduce the issue on nForce 780i SLI and nForce 750i SLI platforms. We have released a BIOS fix for these platforms. Please contact your motherboard manufacturer for the updated BIOS.

Just checked my mobo's manufacturer,EVGA, and the new BIOS was on their website.
