Thanks for your reply Brett,

I'm really surprised more people aren't reporting a similar issue.

I thought this was resolved

I had no idea the problem persisted. I thought we were dealing with a heat issue here and since I did not see anything from Brett after, it was solved

have you guys tried the new beta 174.74 drivers?

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x ... _whql.html

I use them for the 8800GTX in WinXP x64 (but the XP version)

also, use Nhancer Beta with these and set it up as such:

http://forum.nhancer.com/showthread.php?t=269

=================================

Install and run the latest version of Nhancer. It does NOT need to boot with Windows or have a tray icon since the service runs in the background and will properly influence the settings. When it is first run select NO to have it run with Windows or have it place an icon on the tray.

NOTE: FOR VISTA ALLOW THE SERVICE TO INSTALL WHICH IS NEEDED TO OVERRIDE UAC

With any driver above 163.xx Nhancer can no longer delete the profiles as it did in the past, instead the way you OVERRIDE the FSX and FS9 profiles is do the following:

NOTE: you can see IMAGES of the following settings at the BOTTOM of this thread: http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_p ... 25186&PN=1

a.
Scroll down the profile list until you find the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (or) Microsoft Flight Simulator X profile. Click on it once to highlight it. Once it is highlighted, click the DUPLICATE button. You will get a message, select YES to complete the duplication. What that will do is DEACTIVATE the Nvidia profile and ACTIVATE your new duplicate.

b.
With the new profile in the list, make sure there is a bullet in PROFILE on the right. Go down the list on the right and select the following:

AA:
For FSX select SUPERSAMPLING and 8xS (use 8xS Steve)

NOTE: Slower cards and systems in FSX, set to MUTISAMPLING and 4X or SUPERSAMPLING and 4xS

NOTE: FOR THE BETA VERSION THIS HAS CHANGED... SET AA TO COMBINED 8xS

Under the next box, check GAMMA CORRECTION

DO NOT ENABLE THE SECOND SUPERSAMPLE FEATURE IN THIS AREA

UNCHECK "ENHANCED AA" if it is checked by default

AF: CHECKED

Bullet in: 16X

VERTICAL SYNC: CHECKED, Bullet in: FORCE ON

OPTIMIZATIONS Tab:

Texture Filtering CHECKED Bullet in - High Quality
Trilinear Opt CHECKED, Bullet in - Off
Aniso. sample opt. CHECKED, Bullet in - Off
Negative LOD BIAS, CHECKED, Bullet in - Clamp

Check the next three items but do not change their values

COMPATABILITY TAB:

Place a CHECK in all header values but only change the following if needed:

Force Mip-Maps = NONE
Conformant Texture Clamp = ON
Hi Dynamic Range HDR (Enabled)

All others should be at their default values.

Under the CPU Multicore Support, REGARDLESS OF THE TYPE OF CPU YOU USE:

FOR WINDOWSXP SET CPU TO SINGLE
FOR WINDOWS VISTA SET CPU TO MULTICORE

Repeat the above for any other game profile as you may need it.

c.
In the main Nhancer Window, set the bullet to GLOBAL

Set the SAME settings on GLOBAL as you did above.

Close Nhancer and reboot.

============================

use the 174.74's and Nhancer and see if the crashes persist

Welllll.. it's never boring, that's for sure...

I had 174.74 installed, but the link you gave is a 174.74 with a different release date (04-01) .. Same file version though (4.0.100.1109)... so I downloaded it.. and it wouldn't install... tells me there are no drivers on my computer to match my hardware.. which is weird, because this IS a driver installation. Sometimes you feel like your banging your head against a wall...lol

I'm reinstalling my other 174.74.. will try the beta Nhancer too.. and will report back..

Sorry Brett

I am not running Vista.. wont go there right now... dont like it and never will until they change a few things which are scheduled for their SP2 update later this year, early next year.

The link I posted may have been changed

Yes, use 174.74

Forgot to add.. with BETA Nhancer you do not need to DUPLICATE the profile.. just change the FSX profile... you may need to use the DROPDOWN box to find it.. just type in FSX or FLIGHT SIMULATOR X

Change the PROFILE and GLOBAL to the same.. then enter the Nvidia control panel and make sure Vsync is FORCE ON and the monitor is set to SINGLE DISPLAY performance mode if you are using one monitor.

Thanks for the tips Nick,

I already have the 174.74 drivers, but I'll give Nhancer a shot.

I think I might be lucky and optimistic. My test flight was a good 45 minutes, or close to an hour. I'd never gotten that far in a 737, so it might have been a fluke.

Did you get those same symptoms ?  Vertical lines on the "glass" gauges.. then about 10 seconds later, it locks up.. then goes black ?

This is most definately a Vista/nVidia thing.. 'cause I had flawless, Acceleration-installed performance on XP. Maybe it's a Vista64 issue.. because my cousin runs a similar rig on Vista with an 8800GTS, but he's on 32-bit.

I'm not going back to XP, because Vista is already going on 2 years old, and I've heard that the next Windows is in the works ( kinda making Vista like ME, buggy and instantly obsolete).

I'll probably just end up getting a 3870X2 and stick this 8800GTS into one of the computers at our flying club...  nVidia won't get my money again, until ATI does something like this to me..lol  :D

Oh.. and one more note, in the spirit of sharing all data...  If at any time you speed the sim up (which I'll admit to doing, the rare time that I fly tubes, because they can get boring) (95% of my simming is in single-engine props), that seems to increase the likelyhood of this crash..

Still there, huh

I have not seen this complaint listed in forums all over so I would have to question common denominators if both systems are still showing the same issue.

The x2 is a good card, but recently issues with FSX clouds/weather surfaced. The image quality on the card is better than Nvidia and it holds its own in every area except recently weather where it tends to display performance problems. They may very well be driver related because they are just now getting the internal crossfire drivers out with the CAT 8.4's

Windows7 dev cycle was pushed up. Originally it was on a 2010 release path and now they are trying for a year sooner. So yes, Vista is like ME. It shows you how much confidence they have in their own product.

You guys mentioned 'glass' instruments... something in the back of my mind says there was some type of update for that but I thought it was in SP1. I assume you are both on FSX SP2? Did you both install Vista SP1?

So far so good with me (knock wood).. that last driver, with Nhancer seems to be working.

Yes.. I'm fully up-to-date... SP1 in Vista... Acceleration in FSX, and a host of hot-fixes.

These glass gauges are like little apps themselves.. lotsa coding. Somehow, that throws a wrench into what's trying to be displayed. Does the gauge crash ? .. does it cause FSX to crash ? ..  is it just an nVidia, hardware issue ?   Who knows ?

I think it's a rare enough combo... (FSX, glass gauges, on Vista64, with nVidia 8800 cards), that it won't be adressed.. Or maybe it's beyond what a driver CAN fix, and is a built-in hardware flaw in the 8800 ?

Officially 174.xx drivers are 9xxx series only (thats where the No Devices' thing comes from) but the beta has the full ini file for everything since 6xxx series.

- Did you install the latest BIOS and Motherboard drivers? (really dumb question)
- Did you run memtest86+ (it will say unknown chipset but it can do the testing)
