Need advice

Postby pear40 » Thu May 22, 2008 7:20 am

I need some help getting a better videocard. Right now, with sliders on medium low, FSX runs at about 4-10 fps, and can plunge to less than 1 fps. I would like it to run at consistently at 15+ fps. Any advice about a good video card? My budget is $100, but I would be willing to go up a few bucks. I am running a PC on windows Vista home premium, with Dx10. My motherboard is an Asustek Nodusm3. 896.00 MB total physical memory. Two AMD Athlon 64x2 dual core processor, 4200+.

I am afraid your going to have to shell out more than 100 for anything decent and even then you are short on both physical memory and CPU speed

I only want it to run at 15+ fps,  no too high. I am on a tight budget. A little over $100 for the video card is ok, but then I will have to buy just the video card and wait until I have enough money to buy everything else.

Sorry I haven't responded, my internet is down. (I am using a friend's computer right now) I went to best buy and bought an NVIDIA GeForce 8500. I didn't get the 8600 because they only had overclocked ones for $175, and the 8500 was on sale for $75. When the Geek Squad installed it, I learned I didnt have enough electrical power in my system. It would be $80 for more power, and $40 for them to install it. Right now I simply do not have enough money. I guess it wasn't meant to be... :'(

This is what I was trying to convey... the system does not have the ability to support much for 100.. you really need to invest in a combination of parts that will do the job, even from a minimum standpoint

When you are talking in computer terms, you have to come right out and tell me, our else I will be completely dumbfounded. :-?
Thanks for the advice. I am saving my money fo various parts now, so I will ask for your advice again in the future. At least I learned something today, in computer terms, it is better to wait a bit and go for qaulity than buy a cheap piece of junk.

I just spent 550 dollars on 4 gigs of memory because I use DDR3 and understand how to set it up for max performance

I will be spending probably close to 1800+ at the end of of the year, if not more, on the new Intel Nehaelm platform when it is released

Purchasing a system can be difficult if you do not know what to buy.. and unfortunately in this day and age to really get FSX performance overclocking it is pretty much a prerequisite. At the end of the year Intel will be releasing a new platform which will probably remove the need to overclock and those who do overclock will get a massive benefit out of that.

Even if you are satisified with minimal results, spending money on the right parts is very important with FSX. With FS9 you can get away with a cheaper system but not with FSX.
