Problem transferring large files

Postby Groundbound1 » Thu May 22, 2008 9:09 am

I had this problem with the last mobo I was using too. Here's what happens.

Let's say I'm backing up my sim (all 50 gigs of it ::) ) and I start copying folders, one at a time to my back up drive, all seems well until I start to copy a really big folder (about 1gb or more) and the computer reboots.

I have the correct chipset drivers installed, the drives SMART status is normal and they test fine, and Memtest runs without errors.

I have found that I can copy the whole 50GB folder in one lump, if I do so in "safe mode", which made me think it was a driver issue, but again, I have double, double checked all of them and everything seems right.

Could it be a PSU issue, and why does the process work in safe mode?

Could be a memory issue. Why not just make an ISO image?

This can be caused by the drive and the drivers for the drive controller. I have heard of this before with older hard drives and SATA/IDE drivers.

It's that whole "old dogs and new tricks" thing I guess. I'm just a bit set in my ways, and I like to stick with what I'm used to. I mean come on man, I didn't make the switch from Windows 98 to XP until last year! ;D

Is there any cause for concern? I mean, everything else seems fine, and as long as I keep the copy sizes smaller than a gig or so, I don't really have any problems. More curious than worried.

I would need to research the hardware and drivers to see if any issues around this are present however I have in the past seen 1GB limits on file transfers from drive to drive and usually its because of the HDD itself.. its firmware and the drivers.

But I have not seen it in a while.. I think the last time was about 5 years ago

;D Yeah, That sounds about right. That's just about how old the majority of my rig is. I guess I'll just keep doing my backing up in small chunks for now.

Thanks for the info.
