External HD - does it work with FS9?

Postby wolfipilot » Sun May 04, 2008 7:36 am

... hi -

I am currently planning to do a full new set-up of my FS2004 due to a new computer I get these days. The new setup of my FS is of course an issue to be planned quite good :-) ...

However, I think about an external HD for the future, using than the USB link to my laptop. Anyone here is doing it the same? Are there any negative impacts to be expected when using an external HD?

The advantage is on the hand: a stabil system that can be used at more or less any computer in future ...

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I wouldn't think so unless you maybe put in the
x:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9
File path...would FS9 automatically put your data etc in the correct folders on your original drive is the question... :-/

well a while ago i had FSX on my WD MyBook hooked up through the firewire400 and i didn't really experience any performance drop. the only thing that might be the weak spot of doing what you are doing is the data transfer to the memory will be a bit slower. (no pun intended)

the only thing about having FS on an external drive is that you need the drive with you if you travel somewhere.

Vantec makes an external case for a laptop HDD that is usb powered and works quite nice for portability. The whole thing is small and light and comes with a nice carry case.

Thanx :-) ... so I will go for that and have my FS than on the external  HD. Btw.: it's a great thing to plan a re-do of a full-scope FS installation *gg
