I have a nice wood rolltop desk in my room, so it will not fit a desktop. Plus, with a laptop I can sit somewhere else when I am doing other things.

If you can fit a laptop on your desk, you'll fit a nice 22" LCD monitor on it..
With the desktop tower UNDERNEATH the desk  ;)

Under $1,000,000 ;) Pretty much anything because, as I said before, if I am going to get my own laptop, (I am so I am not constanly kicked off during flights and everything else) I want to get something that will run the sim (FSX) really well. I have

To get a laptop that would run FSX to a level that I would call "respectable" you'll be looking at at least 2500. For starters, get the fastest processor possible, FSX loves that.

You will never see that performance from a laptop that you wopuld from a desktop. I would say my pc is fast, and Nick's is much faster and better tweaked than mine. Unless Nick has some super secret skunk works hardware I don't know about (which he might) I'm pretty sure even he cant even get the total of what this sim is capable of.

1.8G processor
VIDEO CARD Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
MEMORY 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz

I give it a 1.. or 2 to be nice

2

1/2.

That is gone. No longer being considered. Now I want to know about the XPS above.

It's an extremely good laptop, but as a laptop the aim isn't usually speed - but power efficiancy. Therefore you'll never be abled to get a laptop as fast as a desktop.

Spend the same amount of money on a Desktop computer (NOT a Dell - they suck) and you should have a computer rated maybe 6 or 7.

5.

Would it be better than a computer with an ATI Mobility Radeon X1400, T2250 @ 1.73GHz (Running now) (assuming the XPS is way better)?

It probably would be slightly better than that. I agree with nick and would rate it about a 5.

Things you could improve upon.

Processor: FSX likes processor and you can always have more
RAM: 4GB is good, but it is kind of slow.  Also it is being shared with the GPU
Graphics: 8600 isn't that great of a GPU. An 8800 would be a much better option. Or even a 9800 if they are offered in a mobile format yet.
Hard Drive: 5400 RPM drives should be off the market, but unfortunately for laptop owners, they aren't. Something with 7200 RPM and a decent amout of Cache would be a much better option.

For the $1500 you could spend on a mediocre laptop, you could build a really kick ass dekstop that would run FSX at at least a 9. I know space at your desk is a concern, but you could always put the tower on the floor under or next to the desk and run the cables to the desk.

Yes, an 8600 is better. The 2.4ghz Core 2 is also a fair bit faster than a 1.83ghz Core 2.
