Nick, i did what you said and it said that the drive had several unrecoverable faults, should i try and look for a manufaturers utility or just dith the HDD?



If the data on the drive is important I would try the manufactures utility disk and run their low level drive check.. some of those like MaxBlast, SeaTools, WD Lifeguard.. have a repair utility but they may also tell you its failed past repair.

ok thanks nick, you help is much appreciated :) and so if everyone elses :)

i will try the manufacturers utility tool tomorrow, its just like my photo's, music and FS downloads on this drive, i really care about my photo's and thats all that im 100% on trying to save!

Be prepared to lose your data (own fault if you don't have a backup of important files)

Run a scan util for a day or so, with a utli that marks out bad clusters. It's best not to bother with repairing bad sectors, as they're probably cause read errors then crashes.

that drive was my backup drive! i dont have an external but then again any hard drive can go faulty so your never 100% safe

Recovery cd with midnight commander does a good job (and it can read NTFS if you have the right one). Adresses by hadrware adress, not by driver so its a little more reliable.

And remove the harddisk from the computer and put it in a cold place before continuing...
