Performance: Fast quad...faster duo?

Am I going to see better performance with a Quad core around 2.2/3 GHZ or an x2 at around 3.2Ghz?

FSX should be better with the quad and FS9 would be better with the 3.2ghz?

Upgrading from an AMD Athlon x2 4800+ 2.4ghz...
3gbs RAM
320gb HD
AM2 motherboard (nForce 430)
8800GT
500w PSU

You've got a pretty good system there, I'd just leave what you have for now. Just buy a better CPU cooler and overclock (I have a 4400x2 @ 2.7ghz)

If you really want to upgrade I'd get a Intel..but since your PC is still decent PC I don't think it's worth it.

I am just thinking of this for a future upgrade. Maybe in November? No hurry here. Quite please with current core.

The AMD Phenom Quad 9500 2.2Ghz beat the AMD x2 6400 by quite a bit in GAMES. However, the duo beat the quad in most all other (non 3D) programs. But not by much. Wonder about AMD's new cores that are coming out...

Tell us when you want to upgrade then we'll give you the best options of the time frame. Telling you now would be no use - by November a great deal of new stuff would most likely be out - 45nm midrange Core 2 quads, newer Agena revisions that OC, and perhaps an early Nehalem.

If you want the best, then you should prepare to move to intel.

When I say best, I mean the one that has the best performance vs price ratio, and you are not going to presently, get that from AMD, and I cannot see any indications of that changing. Intel has no problems at the moment, any problems you previous had with intel are not indicative of any current design, and were most likely a result of other factors.

I would go with a quad core, but again, ask us when you are going to upgade, not 6 months beforehand. Things move fast in the electronic world.

November of 07?

look on the bright side.. it probably means your motherboard technology is only 2 years old

;D

Had it been January of 07 you would REALLY be in trouble      ;D

OEM's make their money by selling you technology that is 1-2 years old because they get it for pennies on the dollar for what it was worth 2 years ago

In massive bulk your motherboard (no parts) cost HP about $2.25-$5.50, 10 bucks TOPS

That's what I had thought.
