9800 GX2 Is It Worth It?

Postby a1 » Tue Mar 18, 2008 6:23 pm

So is it? The price was lower than when the 8800 Ultra came out and it has 1Gb of Memory. Weaker than 8800 GTX in SLI but who really needs SLI.

To Be Specs:
QX9650
4Gb RAM
Raptor 150 Gb 10,000 RPM
Asus Maximus Extreme Board

Geforce 9800 GX2

So how should it perform?

Are the drivers any good?

I think that I'll have to include this to my build in May! Looks like a great bang for the buck, much less than the ULTRA but it out performs it. But is is massive! ;D

I say get the 9800 GX2. Better than both ATI's new and nvidia's old.

9800Gx2

solve

9800 = repackaged 8800

2 x the same old crap = the same old crap x 2

The same old crap x2 = 9800Gx2

Just so you kids know..  you wont be seeing anything new and imporved before May-June and even then they are going to spoon-feed you  LOL

between now and then its the SOS, different number

OK...

So you are saying I shouldn't get it because new technlogy is coming in June? :-/ I kinda need a computer and a gaming rig now. The 8800s have never failed me in my short expirence with it. There must be something new in the 9800 GX2.

Now this is just adding to my comflicts.

ai I am not telling you to wait

I am just informing you that card is nothing but 2 8800's stacked

The 7950GX2 was no prize. I cant comment on the 9800 in that respect but just be aware its not anything new and improved.

Will it work?

I have thought about it and might just buy the 9800. I know I won't be disappointed as the card is what I was thinking of in the first place. I won't buy it just yet but might.

Of topic a bit but Vista Ultimate takes 40Gb of HDD space? :o

Why are you scared from going to ATi? Everything's exactly the same only you download a diferant driver package, and no retarded bugs, and no rediculous Ntune.

OK...looked over the ATI HD 3800 and it says something about Dx10.1. I thought that Dx10.1 was canceled. :-?

I see that the things are exactly the same. :) What bugs and other problems could be in Nvidia stuff? Is it the Hardware itself or the games that it has problems with?

Have you looked @ the HD3870X2. A great card,

I havent had all fun with her yet as I had to change my power-supply.

The HD3870X2 is directX 10.1 compatible and as far as I am concerned, it will still come out.

I don't know the exact features of DX10.1, only that it's small and doesn't make a large diferance. Base your conclusions not on DX10.1, but on performance, and price. :)

It's the drivers that are causing the problems. And to clarify, the 3870x2 may have some driver bugs, ask other people about that 'cause I'm not to sure... but I guarantee the 9800gx2 will have bugs too.

I certainly wouldn't buy a 9800GX2, just get a lower end ATI or Nvidia card to tide you over until next gen. The 9800GX2 is NOT a next gen card, as said it's just 8800 in SLI.

Sounds like you just want to throw most money into your rig, again. If you want a fast HD have you seen the seen Samsung F1 drives? About 120MB /sec read/write which is 2x the speed of my 7200rpm WD drives. And faster than a single Raptor.

Maybe I just can't see it but the 9800 GX2 doesn't support SLI?
Yes Vista Ultimate (any vista for that matter) is a memory eater...however...after SP1, my Vista Home Premium spat up 30gbs of HD space back ;D ;D

I think Vista Ultimate is for very advanced users...Vista Home Premium 64-bit would work just as good. :)
