I say go with 2 HD3870 x2's. Nick said those were the best. Better than the GTX and ultra. :) Maaan...your dad will buy all this? My parents wouldn't even buy me an $8 cooler. Oh well lol...I need a job. :-/

Easy now... Nick said a single x2 would give the ultra a run for its money but Nick also said the card is sitll in a driver dev phase to correct and upgrade the dual core ability and 2x2x3780 is just now being dev'd for to light the fire under it... too soon for that, another month perhaps and it MUST be the right motherboard for that to work as well

Right now is a dangerous time to buy. Anything you buy will be outdated in another 2 months, possibly 3 but no more than that

With the current offerings and to ensure abilty a 2x a single 3780 is a better choice over buying 2x 2x3780 and that also requires the right matching MB purchase

the x38 chipset will support that which is why I would go with x38 over all others right now... it leaves the door open for later... none the less, in 3 months, its all chaging again and anyone not on a DDR3 x45 when its released in 2 months is not going to be using Intel Nellie. that slug will require the new chipsets for full support and its also rumored it will need to be DDR3 too

"Why not throw in a PPU, too? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814143055
That may be my next investment."

lol....chocolate teapot. nvidia have just bought out aegia. In games with aegia support framerate is LOWER.

"and it MUST be the right motherboard for that to work as well"

You just need a motherboard with a single 16x slot. Nothing special about, crossfire is done internally. You don't need any special motherboard. Only if you want to add another 3870x2 you need a Crossfire motherboard, with 2 x 16x PCI-E lanes. I doubt you need the power, and when you do it's probably better to sell the 3870x2 for a single faster card. My motherboard is ATI Crossfire 3200, had a 1900XT but didn't bother with the second 1900XT mastercard..just replaced the 1900xt with a single 8800GT.

"Quad SLi"

Waste of money. And Crossfire scales better anyway.

PPU is already part of the ATI core and will be in R700 as well. An extra card is not needed

nvidia cards will also have that on card

True CrossfireX requires that support on the chipset, be it AMD or Intel

its not Crossfire, its CrosfireX and although it is backwards compat, its not fully backwards compat

yes the x2 is internal.. and only requires one slot. 2 of them require full Xfire support

I was speaking of 2 x single 3870 and you are dead wrong, its not -fully supported- in the future without the x38 or new AMD variant

I have already had the card and I talk to AMD engineering when I turn in my reports after testing.

I do not get my information for harware websites

Please explain I'm pretty sure I could use 2x3870's in my Socket 939 Crossfire 3200 chipset motherboard, both lanes are 16x. Not PCI-E v2 though.

yes, you can but you dont get full Xfire support and the full ability of the cores

You must have the chipset with Xfire hard coded to have full support for Xfire cards.

And in the future that will expand and require PCIe2 for the next gen on Xfire

Even next gen cards will run on older systems but you are not accessing their higher functions without the chipset and the PCIe standard

One other thing too

You can plug in ANY ATI card from x1600 series up into a 2nd PCIe slot and get full physX support... its built into all ATI cores from 2 years ago and only requires the special ATI driver for that to enable it

Nvidia is including it in future releases as a 2nd chip on the card (unless they changed their roadmap) and ATI will always have it inside the core itself.

:)

psssssssst

you want to be a rich old geek?

become a 14 year old geek, stay in school and remain a geek, but, dont come out of school until you have your geek PhD and you are working for a geek company designing and developing geek related hardware or software

Got the 14 year old geek part down. ;D ;D ;D

Remember the list is just what I know and have been looking at. I won't get the 1.2Kw PSU. I have this thing that if I don't see it written down and in a list I can't decide so that's why the first suitable PSU i came across I marked it down.

I won't be going the ATI route. I like Nvidia a bit more so i'll go with the 8800 GTX or even the 9800 later when I see it being suitable. It won't be D-day for my machine for another couple of weeks. ;D I will buy the Antec 900 case now first though. PPUs don't seem to interest me. I mostly won't need that but if I do i'll get a resonable not too cheap one. I will have a revised list As soon as I talk things over with my dad and look at more hard ware. ;)

" won't be going the ATI route"

Even if the next gen ATI kicks Nvidia's butt? My last card was a X1900XT (faster and cheaper than the 7800GTX) this time round I have a nvidia. I do think picture quality isn't as good, AA and generally seems to have more gradients in the shading.

New problem.

I have seen the specs of the Asus Maximus Extreme and read about how tight of fit the heat sink and fan of the QX9650 will be in. If It is too tight there might be some crowding issues that I don't really want.

Will it be that much of a problem with heat and conflicting with other components?

I think it's the name for the next generation set of Intel Processors. I think the current high performence one is called Yorkfield.

I need a switch on RAM. I have found that the modules' sinks were too tall and would conflict with the sink from the processor. I have searched and found the Patriot 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory. I don't know how stable and fast they can be but they don't have high and bulky sinks like the Crucial ones.

Give me your opinions.
