Can't install XP from DVD-ROM.

Postby raptorx » Wed Mar 19, 2008 1:35 am

I've looked all over and I can't find an answer to my problem:

I'm trying to reformat and reinstall XP to one of my WD Raptors and when I try to boot from the CD I get a "Trap" error, 00000006 or something like that.  On another attempt I get a "general protection fault" and a "0000000D" and a whole bunch of other DOS crap I don't understand.

My current install of XP works fine (except I've uninstalled everything, including FSX).  My system is not overclocked at this time.  I pass at least one round of Memtest86 so I don't think it's the memory.

I've used this XP CD to do clean installs before.  It's a certified copy, I've validated all previous installs w/this disk.  So what the hell is wrong here?  All of a sudden I can't boot to the XP CD but everything else works fine?

Sounds like a bad disk or a drive not reading it right

get out the plastic polish and buff it off

Something is strange

how did you get Windows installed in the first place with a borked BIOS situation?

no matter

That fix is for WindowsXP SP2 x32, for ALL multicore, and, single core hyperthread processors

WindowsXP x64 SP2 already has the fix incorporated

I dont know about XPSP3

I'm not sure what happened.  Maybe it was the optical IDE drive (I switched it out with a spare SATA optical I had).  Maybe my motherboard thought my XP setup disk was a virus?  I don't know.

Oh, and now guess what...I got another 4 Gb Kingston HyperX DDR2 1066 (on sale @Newegg for$139) AND consequently I had to get XP 64-bit too (I've been wanting to try that out).

So I will be doing another XP install, this time with 64-bit. ;D  As far as your tweak list for XP, does all that apply to 64-bit as well?  Is there anything I need to be aware of?  Will NOD32 be good coverage for XP 64bit?

Maybe I should have opened another thread about this one.

x64 is exactly the same

you need to make sure you have driver support for all devices

WARNING: Do not install the old version of x64 and then update using the x64SP2 web update... only install a CLEAN and FULL copy of XP x64SP2 from the start.. which is the same for x32

you should always install XP clean and not use the web service packs

those on vista are borked right now and must use the web updater

i had a similar problem with a XP disk but it was down to the optical drive being pants! used my other drive and it installed perfectly :)

having more than one Hard Drive installed and connected shouldnt make a differance aslong as your BIOS is correctly set up, but even still your boot disk will determine what it tried to boot from

Yeah.  Good thing I had a spare drive.  But I did three things at once so I'm not sure which one it was that fixed it.

I checked my 8800GTS card and xtreme gamer sound card-they both have 64bit drivers.
