Booting Problems.

Postby Flying Mouse » Thu Mar 13, 2008 5:40 am

Ok I now have the whole rig together, Now I have installed everything in the right places but I can't boot her up. Having a black screen.

Now I can only think of 3 things:

The HD3870X2 doesint work with the mobo, mobo link below:

http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func ... at2_no=171

I know the mobo doesint support crossfire, but I read in reviews that althought its an advantage it is not a requirement.

I have plugged in the two six pin pci connectors, maybe the PSU aint right, although I doubt that to be the problem.

last thing is my card is dead, problem is i have the fans running when I switch the system on its just my screen aint lighting up.

I then also chucked my old card in to test the screen. The screen is working.

Any advice?

:'(

Mouse :)

Thanking helpers in advance.

Not working with the mobo IS possible and this is what I tried to explain to someone else..

If the standard on the PCIe port is not at least 1.1 that card wont work.. some of those older boards are PCIe 1.0a and a 2.0 card WILL NOT WORK in it, at all and will be restriced in a PCIe 1.1 slot but will function.

I did not look up what that motherboard provides. Its probably 1.1 but none the less, newer video cards may also require a BIOS update to let them function correctly too. In this case, I really have no idea without doing research

So you are correct.. assuming the PSU is able to deliver the power the card requires on the 2 PCIe plugs the issue is either a port conflict, a BIOS problem or a defective card.

Thanx for the reply Nick, much appreciated.

I extracted this from my mobo's mannual:

PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) Express Slots
PCI Express architecture provides a high performance I/O infrastructure for Desktop
Platforms with transfer rates starting at 2.5 Giga transfers per second over a PCI
Express x1 lane for Gigabit Ethernet, TV Tuners, 1394 controllers, and general purpose
I/O. Also, desktop platforms with PCI Express Architecture will be designed to
deliver highest performance in video, graphics, multimedia and other sophisticated
applications. Moreover, PCI Express architecture provides a high performance graphics
infrastructure for Desktop Platforms doubling the capability of existing AGP 8x designs
with transfer rates of 4.0 GB/s over a PCI Express x16 lane for graphics
controllers, while PCI Express x1 supports transfer rate of 250 MB/s.

How will I know what the standard is on the PCIe slot, Im kinda dum with this kinda thing.

Thanx!

PS: there is writing on the mobo that goes like this:

MS7620 Version 1.0 K9N Neo SocketAM2.

you are putting a flagship ATI card in a old worn out Nvidia chipset motherboard

a card that will also overrrun the CPU

The slot is PCIe 1.1 compliant

What Power supply are you using.. name and model number

PSU is the "Cooler Master Extreme Power PSU - 650w" Model Number-RP-650-PCAP

Maybe I should replace my mobo then with this:

abit AX78 / SUPPORT AM2 & AM2+ HT3.0 WITH 2600MT/S SYSTEM BUS CPU / AMD RX780 + SB600 / DUAL CHANNEL DDR2 800 X 4 / 7.1-CH HD AUDIO WITH S/PDIF OUT & GbE / 4 SATA2 RAID & 1 X ATA133 / 1 PCI-E X16 ( SUPPORT PCI-E 2.0 ) , 1 PCI-E X16 ( 1 X 4 in CrossFire ) , 1 PCI-E X 1 , 3 PCI / ATX / 10 X USB V2.0 / EZ CCMOS SWITCH

I can get it for a good price.

Thanx for the help Nick, this is truly appreciated!!!

PSU is borderline

18A on 12v1 and 12v 2 makes 36A total for the system and the card.. the PSU has a LOUSY efficiency rating of 70% which means your not getting 36A, your getting 70% of that or 25.2A under full load

The card requires 28A on its own

Does that mean the problem is the PSU?

I just got the Abit AMD AX78 Motherboard mobo installed. She booted up but again I can understand as this mobo supports pci 2.0 and even allows for crossfire. Far better then the K9N Neo.

I just got my drivers loaded for my screen, GPU and soundcard. As for FSX, I'l install later this evening.

I took COD4 for a quick test and its looking good. Ill post some screenshots when I come back from holiday next week.

As for the PSU, a friend of mine has the exact same model and runs the 8800GTX with no issues so far. I understand the HD3870X2 peak higher then the GTX but with less then 40 watts.

As suspected the issue was the board/BIOS and its inability to support the card

However I don

Nick, I spoke to the shop owner and he is prepared to exchange my PSU.

Problem is which will be good.

He has these 3 in stock, which would be better if any?

1) OMEGA MEGAPOWER 600WATT MAX MODULAR CABLING ATX V2.0 POWER SUPPLY UNIT WITH 1 X BLUE LED 80MM & 1 X BLACK 80MM COOLING FANS , S-ATA CONNECTORS , PCI-E 6-PIN CONNECTORS , 20+4 PINS , DUAL RAILS +12V OUTPUT . ATX 2.0 STANDARD , PFC , AUTO FAN SPEED CONTROL , OVER LOAD PROTECTION , OVER VOLTAGE PROTECTION , SHORT CIRCUIT PROTECTION , RETAIL PACKAGE

OR

2)Coolermaster RS-700-ASAA Real power 700w , EPS12V V2.91 + SSi + ATX 12V V2.3 , Modular cable manafgement , active PFC + 2x6 or 1x6+1x8pin PCI-E power connectors ( 8 pin for for pci-e 2.0 vga card ) , 24pin ( 4 pin detchable ) + 4 or 8pin 12v AUX , 1x 120mm fan with intelligent fan speed control ; with OVP , OTP , OCP , OLP , SCP PRODUCT CODE: RS-700-ASAA

3) iSONIC MEGAPOWER 600WATT MAX ATX12V V2.0 POWER SUPPLY UNIT WITH 140MM SUPER SILENT COOLING FAN , 4 X S-ATA CONNECTORS , 2 X PCI-E 6-PIN CONNECTORS , 20+4 PINS , DUAL RAILS +12V OUTPUT . AUTO FAN SPEED CONTROL , OVER LOAD PROTECTION , OVER VOLTAGE PROTECTION , SHORT CIRCUIT PROTECTION , RETAIL PACKAGE

The price on 1 and 3 in rather cheap, donno why and 2 the most expensive. Number 3 sounds nice? or am I wrong?

Much appreciated.

I have to look up SPECS for all of those.

A little lesson here...

The key value is the EFFICIENCY RATING as compared to the total output of the rails

If a PSU, like you have now, is rated at >70% that means at FULL LOAD, you get 70-75% MAX of the total AMP output on that rail. When they post greater than 70%.. that can be 71%, 72%

I would not touch the 1st or the 3rd one with a 10ft pole.. no specs available

you get what you pay for.

#2 is the winner Efficiency 86%(140W) / 86%(350W) / 81%(700W)
