Just got another WD raptor!

Postby raptorx » Fri Mar 14, 2008 9:00 pm

I just got my 2nd raptor!  This weekend I'm going to do a reinstall of XP and FSX + addons:  My OS goes on the 1st drive, FSX on the 2nd one.  This will tide me over for a few months until I can afford to get that $350 RAID card!

So here it is:

Drive 1) FSX, UTX USA, UTX Canada
Drive 2) OS, GEXnhanced, FEX, My Traffic X, FS Global 2008, aircraft addons.

Does that sound right Gents?

Works for me

Anything that acts as a database like GEX and FEX and sends textures to FSX, goes on the OS partition... anything that must be in the FSX installation such as UTX, FSG mesh, aircraft or landclass products goes on the FSX drive

So if the files are installed correctly the performence issue won't be present?  :-?

OK this sucker's in.  For FSX, should I just use the default formatting or do I set a certain cluster size?

your not on RAID, just leave it at default.

if you custom format it with a larger cluster, use 64K (FSX drive ONLY) but you WILL lose drive space when you do that

The advantage is in the fact the titile and software installed on that drive will not fragment as easy, even so you need to keep up on defrags if you install more itemes over time. If you do not install or change anything, unlike the Windows partition or dirve, FSX will not fragment on 64K clusters.

Ok then.  I'll leave it on default.  Thanks Nick.

Stick to esata, USB is too resource intensive. Also buggy I/O, wouldn't trust data on USB drives.

OK I tried reformatting it and it still shows up as dynamic in disk manager.

Well, i see my waiting to answer has sparked a learning experience

I figured if I waited long enough you would look at the options and get it straitened out

LOL.  That college degree does help sometimes. ;D  But I do appreciate you willing to help.  Now I'm ready for the reinstall.  I have the 2nd raptor formatted & ready.  I have all my FSX goodies backed up.  I even uninstalled everything I could from the OS drive (that currently held FSX) just to make the XP install gods happier, or I just wanted to see a lean, mean, windows drive (with only 7Gb of stuff left) before I obliterate it with a reinstall.  Going offline now.
