HD setup and partitions questions....

Postby Naja002 » Wed Feb 27, 2008 2:54 am

Hi Everybody,

Building a new rig for FSX and have some questions on the HD setup....

Seagate 7200.11 (32mb):

1x250GB--OS + Storage
1x500GB--FSX + Storage
No RAID

Naturally the first thing on the 250GB will be the OS, so it will go on the outside of the platter(s). Plan is to dedicate the first 50GB to the OS and partition the rest for general storage.

500GB....What size partition do I need to dedicate to FSX? For present, future, plus the ~10% for defragging.....FSX will go on the drive first, so its on the outside of the platter(s).

What size partition for FSX?
and
Anything wrong with this plan?

TIA

The layout is fine

forget the partitions... do not partition either one... just use folders and my advice is to NOT USE the FSX drive for anything other than FSX. The less on that drive, the more efficient and faster it will be especially with the larger platter

Never partition performance drives.. only those dedicated to pure storage

that is all

Hi Nick,

Thanx for the reply! Here's the situation: I'm not made of money.

Yes! Got it! Without forgeting what I've already learned--that actually makes perfect sense in a complementary kind of way.

I do have ~300GB of stuff that I don't want to lose. I keep it on 2 different drives--in case 1 fails. I guess for now, I'll keep both copies on this pc and worry about a better backup system later......

Thanx!

Ok, may seem like a silly question--but how do I do that?  When I go to install FSX--its going to want to install on C:\, so how do I get FSX onto the other drive?

Hi Nick,

Many Thanx for Your help. Not to be a pest, but I do need a bit of clarification. What You're saying (I think) isn't new to me in concept, but I've never actually done it before. So, I'd like to make sure that I am clear on what to do.

The closest that I have come is just installing Adobe Premier Pro and designating the scratch disks, etc to a 2nd drive--but Pro was installed on C:\

That's not what You are reffering to, correct?

What You are saying is that during the install--redirect it away from C:\Program Files and direct it to the 2nd drive, correct?

If Yes, then do I want to create a folder on the 2nd drive prior to installation?

Almost there....... ;D

TIA

Ok, Very Cool. I did it the way You said: I created a folder on the 2nd HD and titled FSX and installed to that folder. Work like a Charm!

I've heard of that method, but I never did really understand it or try it. Now I know!

Kudos to You!    [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
