Is the 2 extra gigs of Ram worth it?

Postby coolpick » Wed Feb 27, 2008 2:41 pm

Hey, I'm getting ready to build a new system. Anyway I'm going to use a 2.66 duo core, and a 8800GT, and 2gigs of ram(800) I was wondering if it worth the extra money to upgrade to 4 gigs and get the 64bit vista.

Thanks

I bought 4GB of ram even though I am currently running a 32-bit OS(XP pro). Ram is so cheap right now(DDR2)--why not? I paid ~$17/GB for Ballistix 4-4-4-12 PC6400. My OS will not recognize all of it, and my vid card has an additional 512mb. But it will use the max (whatever that works out to be). And I will see a system ram "increase" when I move up to a 64-bit OS.

Cosair valueselect DDR for this system that I am on right now costs about 3x as much.

What's a 2GB "upgrade" going to cost whenever you're "ready" for it? I already have mine--and I got it Cheap!

Also, if there are any RMA issues--I should be able to maintain 2GB of ram while an RMA is occurring....

Just some food for thought.....

I was just going the pre-built route, I've been thinking of using Cyberpowerpc. But they want like an extra 200:o to upgrade from 2gb to 4gb. Anyway I got looking I'm thinking of just buying it with 512mb and putting in 4gb on my own.

If you are currently using Vista 32 bit with 2gb ram you may see some improvement with 4gb ram on a Vista x64 installation, but as to whether it's worth it or not is subjective.

If you are currently using an XP OS with 2mb Ram, you may experience a loss of around 10% performance in general gaming on identical hardware from what I've gleaned from user reports, I have not done direct comparisons myself.

Also consider the potential incompatibility issues surrounding Vista 64 bit OS's in regards to driver/hardware support.

For the average software install you'll get about 50-60% memory load at idle with 2GB ram...

I have 6GB in it now and it wont rise much over 30%
