HD3870 512MB OR Geforce 8800 GT 512MB?

Ok after some serious reading I found these 2 cards to be great, great w.r.t my budget.

Question is, which is recommended?

The 8800GT 512MB is the faster card, however some people have been having AA/texture shimmering in FS-X so I would do a bit more research into that.

Yeah, Geforce driver issues scares me.

I had a AtI radeon 9600 Pro eons ago, had that card for 3 years.

Worked well.

I then got the 8600 GT and were not ahppy with it.

The 3870x2 is a much faster card than the 8800GT, but you really need a higher resolution monitor to make it worthwhile  - and require a new PSU at the same time.. And probably replace the stock cooler with something else, there's the triple fan Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme, hopefully they'll do another version for the 3870x2.

I had the HD 3870 in mind, not the x2.

However, I will anyway install a cooler for the card, and install a 650 watt power supply, getting a new box at teh same time.

I just got the 8800GT 512mb and I'm waiting for shipping...yes the drivers aren't good but that can be fixed...what I don't like about the HD3870 is it's size...

I just noted there aint much of a price difference between the 8800 GT XXX edition and the 8800 GTS.

Would the GTS then not be better?

To the above.... post... that depends.

The 8800GT 512 is better than the 8800GTS 320 & 640, but then the 8800GTS 512 is better than the 8800GT. And the 8800GT is far faster than the 3870.

You really need a highre resolution monitor to make it worthwhile, there is little point getting 8800GTS or faster if you're sticking with a 19".

The 8800GTS's come with better coolers though (double slot) so are quieter with superior cooling. But some GT's are coming with double slots too.

3870 or 8800GT. The 8800GT is faster, try and find a make with double slot cooler. Or buy the cheapest 8800GT 512MB and fit a Accelero S1
