Video Card Q

Postby MrRooney » Tue Jan 29, 2008 9:04 am

Hi all,
I've recently been given an old Pentium 3 700mhz computer, and i'm wondering which agp or pci graphics card would be best suited to run fs8 or fs9 on medium graphics?
At the moment i've got a 500w psu in there so power isn't really a problem for it.

Computer Specs.
Pentium 3 700mhz
378mb ram
80gb hard drive

I know the computer specs are fairly slow and low compaired to todays that are out there, but at the moment its all i've got to work with.

Thanks you

John

Well John it isn't a million miles from my rig. I'd try and upgrade the RAM to 512Mb (more if your MOBO can handle it) first, then I'd look at something like a Ti4600 card (very cheap these days) and you should get reasonable performance without breaking the bank ;)

Hi Mark,
I'm not too sure that the motherboard could take 512 to be completely honest, but I've had a look around a few sites and the Ti4600 would seem to do the job :) (just got to wait till payday)...

Another little question....

What would your opinion be of buying parts from eBay and places like that?

you have to be carefull when buying parts from e-bay.  The best indicator of a good seller is their feedback score.  When making a large purchase on something such as a video card, look for a seller that has a 100% positive rating.

Buy electronics off of eBay is almost a 100% NONO.
Mostly because you cannot be sure that the condition of the product is how you think...
if you do just remember...if it looks to-good-to-be-true...it probably is ;)

I got my Hiper Type-R PSU from there...It's been around a year now, and it works flawlessly...It's okay to buy from re-sellers I guess...It's just the individual sellers you have to watch out for :D

Nemo, there are better PC's in the tipster out the back of PC shops, you sure you wanna waste time and money on this thing? I think you can do a lot better, and probably for free if you look around a little bit.

A doorknock appeal perhaps

Hi,
Just got my new Motherboard, Processor and Memory through the other day, its quite a large step up from the old system....
1.7GHz Celeron processor
256MB Ram
Soltek Motherboard (unknown model)

Got a small question though, Has anyone heard of a Soltek Motherboard before? and is it possible to use DDR2 ram instead of DDR? (yes i know its a kind of a newbie question)..

Not sure about 110v Hiper R's, but the ones in the UK have been blowing up taking the rest of the components with it.

I had a Soltek mobo in my ancient 600Mhz Duron rig, must have been 2001 or 2002. I'm not sure (because I bought it from my Brother in law) but I think it came as part of a barebone bundle deal from Watford electronics. Surprisingly it's still working well, I donated it to my old workplace when I upgraded.
As for the DDR2 working on your system, definitely not, the slots are different and they use a different voltage.  ;)
