I'm on the edge of buying one, and your rating would be a big help. [Hopefully, it doesn't share the problems of its sibling, the 8800GT...?

I have 2 8800gt cards and have never had a single problem, even when overclock a good 100mhz over the stock speed on stock cooling. I'm assuming the problems you are mentioning are cooling related? One of the reasons that the gt overheats is that the automatic fan control never changes. Even in games it leaves it at 29%. Upping to 80-100% really makes a difference. Unless you have bad cooling in your case a gt or gts would work fine.
